Porting and polishing refers to the cylinder head where a skilled technician uses grinding tools to carefully reshape the intake and exhaust ports. Polishing is not always a good thing and is better on the exhaust port than the intake and in the combustion chamber. The reason to do this is to maximize the flow through the head. Bigger is NOT better. To large of a port will destroy the flow pattern and actually reduce power. The wrong shape is also a problem.

This is not a job for a beginner and in fact only a very few are able to improve power in the range of RPMs used during street driving.

BEFORE even thinking about paying someone to do this (engine partial dissasembly required) Make certain you have optimized the bolt on parts including exhaust manifolds and system. In fact, do not even worry about it.

The bang for buck aspect of port and polishing is just not worth it for our cars. This mod is usually reservered for the motors that will remain N/A and that have reached their full potential with cams, fuel, compression and whatever bolt ons.

To make some real power in our cars, forced induction is the way to go.
