Default Side or middle car seat placement for best rear passenger space?

Currently my daughter's rear facing car seat is on the passenger side and attached using the LATCH system. With this configuration we find it difficult to have two passengers in the rear, the person in the middle has very little room. Has anyone tried putting the car seat in the middle of the rear bench, and do you use the seatbelt or one anchor from the driver and passenger side LATCH to secure the base? I'm not sure if the latter is recommended to begin with, so seat belt is probably the only option? Does this configuration provide more space for passengers in the back? Do you have any issues with rear visibility having the seat in the middle?

Thanks

you're going to have similar issues with space if you put it in the middle (and I think you found there are some stability challenges). Look at options - Diono car seats are about as narrow as you can find. I specifically searched (Craigslist) for this model and depending on what you have, it can be 2-4" in width savings and worth the cost. New is almost $300. On Craigslist, you can find it cheaper or free. I can have two of these in the rear and still squish someone else in.
