Towing w/ NX300h - Kick Sensor
Mornin’ Folks, I have a brand new 2019 NX300h with a Tailgate Kick Sensor. I would be interested in any comments, experiences, or recommendations regarding installing a towing hitch package. My Lexus dealer says no, how about after market solutions? Thanks very much.

Why dealer says no? Its possible to install towing hitch for 2019 NX300

Perhaps because it is the hybrid model? It was my recollection that towing wasn’t recommended, but if you wanted a hitch for a bike rack or the like, I can’t imagine why it couldn’t be installed. It may block the kick sensor on newer models however.

The nx300h has a lower towing capacity than the regular model, but it is still rated to tow 1500. I know that a hitch may interfere with the door kick sensor, so that may be why they don't want to install one. I have a draw tight on my 16 nx and it works well. The lexus oem option is nicer because it is more hidden and attached to the car in multiple points, but at 5x the price it was not worth the extra expense for the few weekends a year where I will be towing.

My own experience
Just bought a 2019 NX300h and had a hitch added to cart bikes around. My sales rep said the Lexus option was too pricey and hooked me up with a local dealer for $220 installed. Kick sensor still works although I want to be careful to disable it when the rack is on. Here is a link. https://www.curtmfg.com/part/13337
Side note that the install did not include a light kit/harness as I don’t have a need for that.

2018 NX 300H with OEM Tow Hitch
Looked for a solution for a long time and finally decided on the oem tow hitch vs after market. First, I'm not sure why Lexus sells a vehicle you can't add a simple tow hitch. I just want to carry a bike. Lately driving some dirt roads I wanted a carrier for a spare tire. (Don't get me started on trying to find a roof rack for the NX 300H.) Curt makes a decent tow hitch that doesn't interfere with the kick sensor for a total install and part around $400. My biggest issue is that you lose ground clearance. The kick sensor is also hard to get to. Lexus sells the oem tow hitch for the 2018 NX 300H but the dealer's position is that the car was not build for it. Starting with the part costing about $550. The install with the dealer is about $1200 because they have to remove the bumper. That's actually a plus for me because it reinforces the back. And since I was paying enough for 4 curt tow hitches, I told them to move my sensor. Which they did to my surprise. Then they mentioned that the vehicle requires a recalibration because of all the sensors. Final install looks decent. It should for what I paid for it. And the kick sensor works! See photos.

They did a nice job with the notch. Didn't lose any ground clearance.

I tried to help a friend install a hitch on his 2021 HX300h but there is a protruding piece of bracket on the passenger side that will not allow it to slide up into place. It appears that the bracket needs to be removed and the edge ground off of it as shown in a youtube video. He is going to take it to a local independent repair shop.
