Pretty much speaks for itself.
Confirms what I have heard from my Russian compadres about DI engines couple years ago
The Lexus NX 200t features the newly developed 8AR-FTS 2.0L turbocharged inline four cylinder direct injection engine that can run on both Otto and Atkinson cycles. Mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, this engine produces 235 hp @ 4,800 rpm and 258 lb-ft at 1,650 rpm.

D-4ST has been standard on all the Toyota/Lexus engines since the 2nd gen is350. The is250/gs300 without dual injection were the last engines I heard about with any carbon issues. The american brands have a different way of solving this issue, its an interesting read.

See, how easy it is?
A 2.0 L turbocharged direct-injected member the AR family, fitted with VVT-iW it is able to operate in both the Otto and a modified-Atkinson cycle. Debuted in the Lexus NX200t.[15] Power output in the 2015 NX200t is 175 kW (235 hp) at 4,800 - 5,600 rpm and 350 N⋅m (258 lb⋅ft) at 1,650 - 4000 rpm. The 8AR-FTS engine had Lexus’ ESTEC D-4ST (Economy with Superior Thermal Efficient Combustion Direct injection 4-stroke with Turbo) fuel injection. With separate twin injectors for both direct and port injection, ESTEC D-4ST could perform high-pressure direct injection into the cylinder and conventional intake port injection, or direct cylinder injection only, according to engine speed.[16] Power output in some applications, e.g. Lexus IS 200t XE30, Lexus GS 200t and Lexus RC 200t is bumped up by 5 kW in the same rev range but torque remains the same.[16]
Only one thing to remember. It is a NEW engine. No one, no one knows what it will do in 2-5 years down the road. There is no HISTORY for those engines, as mileage is spinning around 30-40 000 miles for engine released for 2015 vehicles. Yes, yes, I know they did "extensive research" etc. Same we heard about many others engine and, as Jeremy said, not everything BMW do is good.
We'll see in years to come, what will happen. Until then - we simply do not know. That's about the only honest assumption. I like they also put it into Toyota Crown, as Japanese are known NOT to make crap for inner market. So they should feel confident it's a decent engine. Time will show.
And by the way. Looks like if you want to clean your intake valves, you got to race that engine.
