New 2019 Toyota RAV4. Lexus NX will have to up their game
After seeing the 2019 RAV4 videos at the NY Auto Show I’m thinking Lexus will need to upgrade the NX in order to keep buyers from defecting to Toyota. 8 speed auto with a NA 2.5 liter engine putting out around 200 hp. Plus Apple Car Play and all the electronic goodies at a reasonable price. I’m thinking seriously about trading in my 2015 NX for one. Any others?

2019 infi qx50 and Acura rdx are going to be a tough competition... for the NX.
i like to see lexus nx gets pana roof, HUD and carplay.. which is pretty standard on any luxury cars and highend budget cars.

My guess is that the NX will get Apple CarPlay either for the MY2019 or 2020. Then see a redesigned NX in 2020 for MY2021 with all the features seen in the RAV4 and more.

If you haven’t seen the 2019 Rav 4 you should definitely take a look. The redesign is pretty phenomenal. Hopefully Lexus has a similar refresh this Fall, otherwise I agree with OP that there will be defectors to Toyota. The “fit and finish” exclusive bragging rights of luxury brands has been losing ground for years...this coming from a current LS owner.

Lexus will have a better finish, but as far as fit, Lexus and Toyota cars go through pretty much the same building process. Your Toyota should not rattle any more than your Lexus just because of the badge.

Agree 100%. We were going to trade in our 2015 RX450h for a 2018 NXh until we found out the panoramic roof and HUD were only going to be available on the overseas version. WHAT!!! Now waiting for the 2019 Acura RDX hybrid. Between my wife and I we have owned 12 Acura's over 25 years. We went over to Lexus five years ago. Can not beat their reliability and cost of maintenance. So glad we did not pull the trigger since seeing the 2019 RDX. No comparison. Lexus has no Android Auto or Apple Play. Has no HUD or panoramic roof. Never liked the front grill on the Lexus SUVs with that large mouth grill. Do not like Lexus's two tone seats or only black dash that shows every piece of lint. RDX has a much better looking modern shifter, medium gray dash and much better mouse pad. The SH AWD is all wheel drive on steroids. The NX has no wood accents and not real leather. If this comes in with the hybrid option around $48,000 it will be a huge success. The MDX hybrid with every option list at $58,000.

The 2019 Rav4 has caught my eye. Supposedly the hybrid version will have a 600mpg fuel range, so I'm guessing the city mpg will be in the mid to high 30mpg range, which would be great for my needs. What will be even better is if the Rav4 gets a plug in option a la the Prius Prime and gets the first 25 miles solely electric, though this will not be the case.
Be cautious of the new Acura's. The 2019 RDX looks promising, but I would be weary of their 10 speed transmission. Their reliability is not where it once was. I gave up on Acura when my TL needed to have its transmission rebuilt and also needed a new engine due to absurd oil consumption.

I agree the new RAV4 is a nice rugged looking CUV with superb cargo capacity and interior room. However, latest Toyotas on the new TNGA platform (Prius, Camry) have shown their cost-cutting in their interiors. Camry and Prius have lots of hard plastics and much of the interior feels cheap and thin to the touch. Can't draw the same conclusion yet on the new RAV4...
Lexus (and Toyota) is typically on a 6-year generation cycle with their FWD platform vehicles and combined with continued hot sales of the NX, expect the next NX to be no sooner than a 2021 MY.
