Default Anyone done rear brakes yet?

I know the NX have the electronic parking brake built into the calipers. Besides using a factory computer to de-energize the rear calipers, is there a way to put the rear caliper in service mode to replace the rear pads? I read in a training manual that u can remove the motor and turn it with a hex key. By doing that, u have to replace the seal too

Yes there's a way. From the shop manual:

When not Using the Techstream:

  1. Turn the engine switch off.
  2. Using SST, connect terminals 12 (TS) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.SST:

    09843-18040

    NOTICE:

Do not connect the wrong terminals, as this will cause parts to be damaged.

    *1
    DLC3
  3. Turn the engine switch on (IG).
  4. Within 8 seconds, operate the electric parking brake switch (integration control and panel assembly) to perform 3 on operations on the lock side (off (release) to on (pull)) and 3 on operations on the release side (off (release) to on (push)).NOTICE:

If the operation is performed too quickly, the system may not respond. If the system does not respond, perform the operation again at a slower speed.

    HINT:

The parking brake indicator light (red) flashes (0.25 second intervals).
  5. Depress the brake pedal, and then push and hold the electric parking brake switch (integration control and panel assembly) to the release side for 5 seconds or more.
    NOTICE:
    • Perform this procedure with the engine switch on (IG).
    • Hold the brake pedal until the system changes to pad replacement mode. If the brake pedal is not depressed, the cylinder boot may become twisted.
    • When the system changes to pad replacement mode, DTC C13A7/43 may be stored. If the DTC is stored, clear the DTCs after the procedure (rear brake pad replacement, etc.) is complete.
    HINT:

After a short time passes, the parking brake actuator assembly operates (if operated from the parking brake locked condition, the motor of the parking brake actuator assembly is temporarily stopped after being operated and then operation starts again), and once the assembly finishes operating, the parking brake indicator light (red) flashes slowly (1 second intervals) (nut moves back inside the cylinder and system enters pad replacement mode).
(b) Turn the engine switch off.

Thanks.

But there is 1 step I don't understand... in step 4, it says 3 on operation on the lock side and 3 on operation on the release side.

So does that mean pull 3 times and then push 3 times?

Here's a thought, couldn't you just turn off the vehicle in neutral or reverse so the emergency brakes don't engage?

The problem is the piston in the caliper needs to be retracted fully to replace brake pads.

Sounds to me like pull the parking brake thing 3 times and then push it 3 times. Not the first time I've seen Toyota/Lexus use silly things like that to activate things...on the older Rav4's you could do the "tap dance" where you push/hold the brake and handbrake a bunch of times to turn off the traction and stability systems.

Lol. Nothing is made easy anymore for DIY guys. I'm guessing no one on here did their rear brakes yet with this technique.

I already bought a TPMS programmer (Autel TS501) and will be just buying a scan tool with parking brake functions in it when I start doing brakes once the warranty is done. A few hundred bucks for a decent scan tool is worth it over the life of a vehicle.

I just ordered the autel ebs301 to do the rear brakes. Hope it works.

Anyone here recommend any performance pads for the NX? I have been using hawks Hps for all my previous cars and love it but they don't make it for the NX

correct it’s a Toyota software and can be purchase on eBay or amazon. All u need is a pc laptop and follow the instructions how to install the program. I’ve recently did my rear brakes with techstream and it works perfectly. I know the autel top of the line diagnostic machine works also but I haven’t tried the one u mentioned.
