Default Car & Driver Comparison Test

The NX did well in this test coming in #2 behind the X1. I don't know why C&D includes it with these smaller SUV's vs. the X3, Q5, GLS etc.

Saw this on the weekend and was wondering the same thing, those are not vehicles I cross shopped at all.

Interestingly, they do have similar wheelbases, power and dimensions.

I agree with how weird it is that Car and Driver compared the NX with the likes of the X1, Q3 and GLA. While I was shopping, I was looking at the NX, RDX, Q5 and GLC.

I don't know if the outcome would have changed but it seems like the NX does compete, and is cross shopped, more with the X3, Q5, new GLC and to some extent the MKC. I don't know if Infiniti has anything in this segment.

It's Lexus thats positioned the NX with the Q3, X1 and GLA. Their factory backed comparisons run by gravy trainers always feature these cars. Lexus underestimated the cargo size of the NX by quoting only the area under the rear cover.

Why?

Well it can be marketed as a big small SUV rather than a small mid SUV. The X3 and GLC are larger than the NX, so is the new Q5. The NX can't hope to compete against these multigenerational European vehicles.

I don't know if it really fools anyone since most shoppers are smart enough to compare vehicles. Or maybe its just those enthusiasts like on this site. Others may be happy to accept Lexus marketing guff.

What category will they fit the new UX. Micro SUV?

I'm guessing they feel that the RX is the natural competitor for those models.

Lexus corporate is comparing the NX to vehicles that cost about the same, that would be my guess as to why they are comparing it to German SUV's that are smaller.

Yes, after options the GLA, X1, etc, can easily match or exceed the NX's price. I have actually been cross shopping the GLC with the NX (RX has gotten too big), but the GLC can easily run 10k more than the NX with options.

I looked at the Q3, GLA, MKC and actually preferred the Q3 but there were no cars matching what I wanted so it came down to the Lincoln, loved the power, not feeling the push button transmission or seating, so went for the NX F sport

nice find!

my wife has a 2016 MB GLA and i love my NX so much more. The GLA is quicker and has a nice simplistic blackwood interior plus awesome panoramic roof, but the NX kills it in comfort, style, reliability, maintance, and just overall good looks.

Your wife obviously has a GLC300, not a GLA...which is a class above the NX. I think the GLC competes more with the RX even though the GLE does too. The GLC and RX are closer in price, and the GLA and NX are closer in price.

All,
Let's be clear here. Lexus has designed and targeted the NX against the main luxury compact SUV players in the segment: RDX, X3, GLK(GLC), Q5, and MKC. To a lesser degree, against the EX35/QX50, XC60, Evoque and Macan.

There's a tonne of supporting evidence I won't post here you can search, but here are just a few:

- Spy shots of test mules of the NX at the time of development were shot with the Q5, X3 (and Evoque) as the competitive benchmarks.

- Lexus officials in their multitude of interviews during and post-China launch in 2014 (and in Whistler, BC in July) have pinned the NX against the main players above.

- Lexus College posted a video comparing the NX's characteristics against the X3

- Overall interior and exterior dimensions (and yes including cargo), are within competitive margins of each other.

- List goes on...

It's the few automotive reviews putting the NX against the sub-compact smaller SUVs like the Q3, X1, GLA, etc that have people believe the NX is in that segment but it's NOT. The NX is in there because it's similarly priced with the smaller German vehicles. This has been the case, ad nauseum, over the years with the RX too being compared to the Q5 and X3 because of the RX's pricing while its segment is the same-sized but pricier ML/GLE and X5 (among others). Yes, the consumer will cross-shop all these vehicles (I did including larger vehicles) because of the pricing overlap, but this favors the NX (and others like the RDX) which are the value leaders and their top sales among the sub-compact to compact luxury SUVs in N. America reflect this. This is a smart proven move by Lexus with the RX, and the same strategy is proving to be similarly successful with the NX.
