Default Dealership policy on deposits

Just wondering if any of you have had experience in the past putting in a $500-1000 deposit for a new vehicle and for some reason cancelled the order/purchase (prior to delivery of vehicle) and have gotten the deposit back...is there usually a policy from dealerships that you can't get the deposit back or you always have the right to get it refunded? Any feedback would be appreciated...

My dealership wants $500 check that they hold and don't cash until the car arrives and final paperwork is being done.

If you need to cancel, they rip up the check. No harm no foul. They know they will sell the car.

That's what I figured...just wasn't sure if dealerships have this rule or policy...thanks!

tekbiss, I know I could have had a full refund if I changed my mind on the order since they will resell it to the next in line anyway. My sales rep always told me this verbally and I never distrusted him having bought in the past from the same person/dealer. Of course, if you put a deposit on an exclusively rare low-selling model, maybe a different story though it would be in writing for which you'd explicitly sign or initial.

Reconsidering your order?

Unfortunately yes...nothing to do with the vehicle just more of a financial decision at this time...I'm sure the dealership wouldn't have trouble selling the new order to the next customer as demand on it is still high...
