Lexus previews production NX compact crossover

The compact crossover will go on sale in the fall of 2014 as a 2015 model.

Lexus has once again gone from concept to production vehicle in record time, and if this teaser image is any indication, it has significantly toned town the design of the LF-NX concept -- no surprise there, though in this case it appears Lexus has ditched the angular design language almost entirely. The production version of the NX also appears to have received a softened version of Lexus' corporate "spindle" grille. Lexus has also fine-tuned the headlight design from the concept car, though the LED running lights remain very similar to those found on the concept. The (very) large inlets right below the headlights have vanished, and designers smoothed out the design of the front and rear wheelarches.

What is not apparent from this latest teaser shot is whether Lexus has kept the black mesh grille, or has given it a slightly lighter color for production. There are some indications that the grille will feature four large horizontal bars, which will certainly tame the uncompromising look of the LF-NX concepts.

The NX is slated to go on sale in the fall of 2014 as a 2015 model, and will be positioned just below the RX in Lexus' model hierarchy. Lexus has remained without a sub-RX model longer than many other Japanese manufacturers with a significant presence in the U.S. market, and this new model is intended to take on offerings from Germany in this rapidly expanding segment.

The 2014 China auto show is scheduled to run from April 20-29, and is expected to feature a number of important premieres -- China is now the largest car consumer market in the world.

Interesting article.

Most concepts get toned down for release. The big question is how much.

Not sure how the hell they concluded by a teaser its "significantly toned down" lol...

Lexus is having a great year thus far and with this and the RC it will propel them with serious momentum into 2015...

They should make F sport model AWD with 2.0T. That would be awesome.

I agree. If they mean the concept's gorgeous wheels went from 20" to a more conservative 17" and 18" option, and actually add door handles and usable mirrors, sure it's been toned down. But the majority of all the creases (albeit slightly softened and less Decepticon) we see in the front and sides are still there, and the best part for me is they retained the triple "L" LED lights! My guess is if something got toned down more significantly, it will be at the rear in particular the large crease cutting through the bumper and lights, and the lower valence.

My '11 RX lease is almost up and looking to buy something smaller and fuel efficient. I hope it will have less road noise than my 2011 RX. On anything other smooth asphalt roads, it gets rumbly. I don't mind the engine noise and actually prefer the engine noise but road noise does not equate to being sporty. Also, a little less shudder from the structure when people close the doors would be nice too. The only draw back about the 2.0T might be harsh vibrations if they decide to cheap out and not use twin balance shafts.

Yes yes two very different cars, but newer cars should have better refinements no?

Folks, had a chat with the GM of my local Lexus dealer while I was in for servicing today and he said the NX will be available in the September to October timeframe. Fingers crossed he's right.

(as an aside, this is for Canada but US likely the same and he also said the RC is slated for November-December, and RC-F Q1 2015)

I think the NX will look closer to this.I don't think Toyota will go too exotic.
