Can any NY'ers familiar with the streets post a route that people from NJ/PA can follow without killing our cars?
That would be of great help....
there is no good way to get through Brooklyn, but if I had to choose, take the Verazano (lower level) to the BQE all the way through in to Queens and jump on the LIE in the middle lane.

Now you know when the streets are that horrible when guys are mentioning which particular lane to drive on while on the highway . I always go on the lower level of the Verrazano. I didn't drive on the BQE while I was up there this past weekend but damn I have fond memories of it. It's still hard for me to believe that it's now "acceptable" to drive on in our cars. But Chris has been saying that it's gotten better so I'll go by his words.

I haven't driven the LIE in awhile, but I remember that it was probably the worst road I've seen in my life outside the BQE.....
The LIE is not bad..you shouldnt have an issue except maybe a dip or two in the road...other than that you shouldnt run into any monsterous potholes...
The BQE is a different story...just drive slow..

Headed East, Cross Island is nice until you start going south past the Grand Central. Once there, again stay in the middle lane. The left lanes (both directions) have bad sewer dips
