How to tell if brake pads are worn?
Hey guys. 2006 GS430, 148,000 miles. Last had pads replaced at about 70,000 miles. I am the second owner of the car, purchased the car with 50,000 miles and when the pads were replaced at 70,000, they were the original pads.
I am very easy on brakes. 95% of my miles are highway miles.
Here is why I'm asking. At 140,000 miles while at the dealership for an oil change, my dealership gave the brakes a "yellow" light, meaning that they would need to be replaced soon. However, at 145,000 miles, the same dealership gave the brakes a "green" light, meaning that they were fine. My service advisor told me that sometimes it's hard to get a good look at the pads while looking through the wheels, which could explain the discrepancy. I don't doubt that, but I guess I'm just wondering if there's a sure fire way to tell.
I will be going back to the same dealership at 150,000 for my next oil change. I could have them check again then, but if there was an independent way I could verify myself, I think I'd rather do that.
Thanks for the help.

If your service advisor does a brake check by looking through the wheels....find a new service advisor and or garage.
Any brake shop will do a free brake check and show you the brakes. You can jack the car, take off the wheels and look through the calipers and get a pretty good idea....Me I'd just go to a brake shop.
But your mileage does make me think they are probably due soon.....but I'm worse than your service advisor cause I can't even see the brakes!
