Default Question about corroded battery terminals!

Whats up CL, just wanted to know if anybody knew what causes the terminal to corrode? is it always the battery leaking or can it be the terminal itself? Because my terminal is only a year old and it already is slightly corroded and the terminal partly broke away. The battery is fairly new as well about a year old too, its a Gel battery from Autozone so I figured it wouldnt leak. Any opinions would be appreciated.

Don't worry, that's perfectly normal, and it will appear faster if you drive for long periods of time without turning the car off. I have broken a terminal bolt before on an old car, so now I remember to check on the posts every once in a while.

Just hit it with some warm water and baking soda and a dish scrubber. Be careful there will be a lot of whitish residue if you let this dry, and it could make a mess on your garage floor too, so take it slow and wipe it up with a paper towel or something.

You can also put a bit of vaseline on the terminals like the above guy suggested. Make sure it's tight when you reattach it.

I pour some Coke soda into a cup and dipped my terminals in there (the terminals that connect to the battery) for a few minutes. You can see the corrosion just bubble off (kinda cool) then wiped them clean with a cloth.
As for the terminals on the battery itself, they weren't to bad so I just gave 'em a good wiped down/off.

Finally, since I'm really **** at times, I gave the terminals a good coating of CRC's Battery Terminal Protector.

Wow I had the mechanic clean them up and tighten them up and WHAT A DIFFERENCE! The car is MUCH more responsive and everything works better even the heated seat is more powerful it's amazing! Love the car even more know. Who knew what a difference that would make, and it was only slight corrosion!
