Default First Oil Change

Picking up my new RX-350 this week.
I noticed the first oil change is scheduled at 10k miles. I usually change the oil the first time in a new vehicle around 2500 miles to clean out the metal shavings that will occur when breaking in a new engine.

What are your thoughts ob this, am I old fashion in thinking this way?

Also does anyone know if the new Lexus's come with a full synthetic oil fill from the factory, Is Synthetic recommended?

You can use synthetic. I would wait till around 2500 miles and do the first oil change to synthetic, as you suggested. Something about old habits dying hard. I cant stand the thought of pushing even synthetic oil past 6500 or so. I would NEVER go 10k.

I'm with you, I'm not going 10k, It means 1 extra oil change a year for me. I'll go 5-6k tops.

Yes the 2010-2013rx comes from the factory with 0-20 synthetic oil. Years ago lexus recommended oil change every 3750 miles then they went to every 5000 miles, now on some models,( soon to be all models), 10,000 miles. One of the problems with 10,000 miles services is, if you miss a oil change service, you might go 20,000 with out an oil change. All to save a little money.

I'm pretty **** about oil, oil filters and the frequency of changes. I'll stick to 6-7k on a quality synthetic. Does anyone here change their own oil? I'm assuming there's nothing tricky to the RX oil changes. I hope it has a regular spin on oil filter and not a canister.

Just make sure you don't crack the cap. You have to get the right socket......

With the right socket it is easy to change, just do not overtighten the cap when you install it

Is it a special tool needed or a 1/2" socket?

I would use synthetic right away to help the engine stay as close to factory clean as possible. I've used penzoil platimun for about 4 years now and its great. Good price, great oil, and you can pick it up at any walmart.

There is a special tool... Assuming it is like every other Toyota now, there is a 1/2" socket hole - that is only used to remove the center piece as a drain...

Something like this is what you need:

Haven't personally confirmed it, but it works on every other Toyota so far... 64mm with 14 sides... could always measure just to be sure...

Hi 2013RX. I am in same boat you are - a new 2013 RX350 intending to do my own oil changes. I also doubt I will wait 10,000 miles for the first oil change.

I picked up an oil cartridge wrench for Lexus from a company called Assenmacher Specialty Tools, Inc. Here's a link to their oil cartridge socket:http://asttool.com/detail_page.php?f...nge%20Products

I just got mine in the mail and it is such nice quality that I turned around and ordered their Threaded Oil Funnel that fits Lexus and Toyotas with threaded oil caps:
Amazon Amazon
I don't know if the link to Amazon will show up on my post, but the tool is Assenmacher OFTOY1038. Of course, both tools are a little pricey, but so is the car you just bought.
