Default Oil filters

Is there such thing as a better oil filter for the Lex? I've been buying Toyota oil filters since day one, but I want to steer away from them because of the premium the dealerships charge. Is there anything that is as good or better than a standard Toyota oil filter? I see Fram at the local Kragen, yay or nay?

Yeah, I think the Toyota filters are probably high quality ones.

Posted on my webpage. see under GS400 tech section. there is a comparison between Mobil 1, Toyota (supra) and Lexus filter (ie diff part number). The filter used on Lexus is the best one. Go to toyota, give them the part number for the Lexus filter, they can get it for you.

Rich,

I once came across a page where a guy extensively tested all these different filters and even pulled them apart and measured and tested the inside material. I think I remember FRAM being among the worst of the filters tested. I just take my lexus filter part number to Toyota and get those filters. I know there is a filter that comes with oil in it and is sealed with plastic, but I don't know the part number. I think they're about $10, a little help anyone?

Tim

I actually have the part number on my FAQ: http://www.intellexual.net/faqframes.html The gasket is already greased up, but i like to coat it in motor oil also just so it doesn't seize up in three months.

I wouldn't use a fram ever. If you want a quality filter WIX filters are good. You can buy them at NAPA, under the napa gold name.
The golds are the premium wix filters and the silvers are economy.
Fram is like a Auto Zone style filter, and the LEX doesnt need discount parts store parts. IMO

I've always though oil filters were like gasoline. No real difference between the generic stuff at costco and chevron or whatever. I just buy whatevers cheapest. Parents did that on our Toyota Previa and we got 170k on it easily. Car was still goign strong it got into an accident and insurance totalled it. If cheap generic filters can get 170k then it's good enough for me. We never did any maintenance on the previa either. Then again this could be just cause of toyotas damm krazy reliability.

to me, it's more *fun* buying the "proper" toyota filters. i really dont mind paying 3x more for the jdm v8 filter for my 6cyl ES. weird me.

Try the K&N filters. I live in one of the worst areas for a car, Mexico City. My local Toyota dealer is smart enough to offer customers these filters for a little more on request, and for good reason, they trap most of the particles. You have other options in the States, but my latest checkup at Lexus showed no problems.
