My Experience: Don't ever use Dexcool
I was recently checking the coolant level in my winter car ( a 3 year old domestic purchased new with dexcool, Car type withheld as to avoid ridicule;) ) When I pulled the cap off there was literally a handful of dexcool sludge on the bottom of the cap. I took it in for a flush and the mechanic I dealt with said this was becoming very common in dexcool equipped vehicles. He said this sludge is clogging heater cores and messing these cars up. He said GM sent out a notice to tell mechanics to replace dexcool with standard green coolant if the customer agrees. Also, after it was replaced, my heat was way hotter than before( That's important when you live in minnesota). Just thought I'd share my experience with the supposedly "better" Dexcool. DON'T USE IT IMO

Don't Ever Use DEX-COOL
Hello,
I can appreciate the problems that you had with your "no name" domestic, but if your car came with DEX-COOL, I believe that it is better to stay with it. The difference is that the seals in your car are designed to use DEX COOL. My experience has shown me that if the coolant is switched either way, long term damage may result. My friend had a 96 Mazda Protege using Ethylene Glycol (green stuff), and he decided to switch to DEX-CO0l, and it was a costly mistake. This caused him to lose his engine from overheating....(a teenage son was driving and did not see the gauge. Water pump seals were damaged, and loss of coolant occurred...(Minus 1 engine). This has also happened vice versa with a GM Camaro 1995 with 5.7L engine. SOME of the vehicles of that year got DEXCOOL, and others got ethylene glycol. My friends had the green stuff, and the dealer replaced it with DEX-COOL. Less that 2000 miles later the engine had to be replaced..(by the dealer free of charge of course). Just be careful with that stuff, and make sure that all of the old type is out first before adding the new stuff. They are NOT compatible, in case you decide to chage coolants anyway... Just my $.02 GSEREP1 |
The Toyota dealer here in Mexico City tried to put that in my car, until I stopped them. Also tried to add Esso ATF fluid. I had to talk to the guys in the States to let them know what to do and not to do as far as fluids.
