I'm at the same dilemma, too. Mobil 1 seems to be quite popular and the default choice (along with the apparently better Royal Purple and Amsoil) but not sure if Mobil 1 is made in both a synthetic and non-synthetic (conventional) form because I'm not quite convinced to use synthetic yet because of things I've read, like leaks, etc. and other things, like switching from conventional oil to synthetic (or vice versa).

I'd really like to know what kind of oil is in my engine now, if it's conventional or synthetic oil and the brand of oil so I can better determine which one to go with.

Whoa with the caps on every word! I use Lubro Moly and swear by it. The person that owned it before me used Castrol and it didn't run as smooth or strong with that junk in there, but it's recycled oil, the Lubro Moly isn't.

I would go with Valvoline Maxlife synthetic blend found at walmart in a 5qt jugs for less than $12. It has a very robust additive pack and is made specifically for higher mileage cars with seal conditioners and seal swellers to condition seals and decrease the chances of oil leaks. Great product and great used oil analysis reports over at BITOG.
