New SC300 owner here: Whats the best oil/filter?
Hello, just got my 97 SC300 on Sunday and was wondering what was the best oil and grade + filter for my 97 SC with 102K?

You should replace the oil drain plug washer everytime you change the oil. The washer cost around ~$0.50 at toyota dealers. If you just ask for one or two, they give it to you for free sometimes...
I would suggest either Mobile1 or Royal Purple Oil, and oem oil filter or Mobile1 Oil Filter. If you are getting oem oil filter, toyota dealership has it for alittle less.

I use PureOne or Mobil1 filters if they are on sale. My usual engine oil is a 5w-40 during the winter and 10w-40 during the summer. Either Mobil1, Royal Purple, Syntec, whichever synthetic is cheaper and I usually run it for 5k miles (usually 5-6 months). I found Mobil1 5w-30 to be a bit thin for my car and allowed a lot of valvetrain chatter. Moving up to a 40 grade helped with that.
And yes, replace the gasket each time.

The drain plug gasket/washer above is a toyota part.
But you can find suitable drain plug gaskets/washers at automotive parts stores.
I typically use a washer that is either 100% metal, or has a metal core (but has a slight rubber covering). Although I've been told by one person that he didn't have a good experience w/ the metal core w /rubber outer washers...I've never had a problem w/ them. I've also been told, Teflon washers work well.

Help?
Hey guys i just bought a 98 Sc300 with 130,000... I was going to buy to sell, but i drove it for a week and im in love with the car. So now im in the long process to restore it because cosmetically its trashed. (in the near fuiture I will put up picks for opinions)
So anyways, The car has been sitting in the front of their home for a couple of years, and serviced a year ago but ran less than 3k miles that year...(I saw the Tire Kingdom receipts).
They told me they have used synthetic most of the cars life but once they purchased a new car they neglected it. The last couple of years [[3 or 4yrs...(2 or 3 oil changes)]] he just took it to the mechanic and didn't ask questions.
So again, I live in Miami so its always hot and its a 98 Sc w/ 130000 miles....What oil should I use?
ps.. I have heard mechanics say 10-30 org/conv, some mechs have even told me 20-50 heavy duty, and a few said synthetic 10-30 or 15-40 should be best....
Thank You, Alex

man i wish i had seen this thread sooner. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES run that oil in your engine. It is TOO thick, it will foam, and is too thick to lubricate your rods and heads (among other things) properly.
If you already have it in there DRAIN IT NOW and put 5w30 in it. 15-40 is a diesel oil (Higher compression needs thicker oil, diesels are like 23:1 compression ratio's, or higher.

As to the guy who used 15w-40... It's not as bad as the previous poster described. 40weight is fine once warmed up and foaming is not the issue. Unless you live in the south in the summer the 15w is too heavy you'll starve the top end during start up. If you're regularly in the 90F during summer I think it might be ok. But definitely change it out before the weather gets cooler. Personally I'd change it out sooner than later.

I use either Mobil 1 European or Amsoil 0W-40 European year round (in VA) in all my Lexi except the 2009 where I'm using Amsoil 5W-30. I'm using the old Toyota filters (I got 24 of the 90915-20004) on my old stuff and Toyota OEM on my 2009 IS350.
