Tilt/Telescopic Steering Column Problem
I have a 99 GS400 steering wheel that telescopes out, but will not raise up. Lexus dealer wants $1500 and Toyota wants $1100. Is there any way not to replace steering column gear asseembly?
Thanks, Duane in Chicago Area  |
Junkyard, thats where Im gonna get mine. I guess its a common problem

Diy
There is a good DIY here: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ght=tilt+motor
Scroll down to post #12 and follow instructions I followed the instructions in this post and and got my tilt wheel function working again and spent just a few dollars on grease. |
as said, you should try to grease up the motor before replacing the whole thing. Then again, the motor contacts might be worn out by now.

EDIT: I just read the thread posted above. I think I may have the dealer disable this feature when I have my 90k done. I am the only person who drives my car, and I have no problem getting in and out with the steering wheel in its desired position. As long as I can still move it up and down with the joystick, and as long as it still moves with the memory settings, that's good enough for me. I never use my steering wheel as leverage to get in or out of the car, but it would really suckola if one or both of the motors took a crap on me. |
Replace the motor Brushes
I bet thet the brushes in the motors would wear down before the motors actually failed. Even though when I cleaned out all the brush dust I did not change out the brushes in the motors but they could be replaced. Mine looked to be less than 50% worn (a guess since I did not see the brushes in their new condition). It looked that the motor did not have good contact because of the dust, not because of lack of grease or because of a bad motor. I bet that you could find replacement brushes at a Radio Shack. If and when my tilt steering goes out again I will just look to replace the motor brushes along with doing every thing else I did in the DIY. But I do not expect to have to this within the next 4 years and My tilt motor is used probably 18-24 times on the average day.
