Default Where can I dispose of fluids (other than oil)?

Just curious. My local WalMart will accept my used oil (while my local car shop won't... go figure). But I just read a post about not mixing fluids. When I flush my coolant or change my brake fluid, where do I take these fluids to dispose of? I've gotta say that my local mechanics shop really rubbed me the wrong way when they refused to take my used oil. I would have thought that there was a law stating that if change oil as a business, you have to accept used oil from outside individuals for environmental purposes... anyone know of any laws around accepting used fluids?

I know in NYC all mechanics shops are required by law to accept used oil for collection. THey fuss about it, but in the end they all do. Also, all gas stations are required to collect used oil also.

They balk because they don't know what else besides used oil is in those containers that you want to drop off- just a little bit of certain common contaminants can ruin their entire vat of used oil. Oil that is contaminated with antifreeze, solvents, water or gasoline can't be recycled.

I know that the Hollywood, CA JiffyLube (or EZLube- I always get those two chains mixed up) accepted my used ATF last year. But I never found any place to take my used coolant and brake fluid. The only sure thing is when they hold those local household hazardous waste roundups, but they are not held too often in my area- only once every 2 or 3 years.

Local hazardous waste disposals are now held in Los Angeles County at least once a month, in rotating neighborhoods...and there are designated disposal sites open all year long as well.

Maybe there is some sort of community disposal site where you live.

Yes, that's why I said "in my area" - it's a rare occasion they hold it anywhere I'd want to go to on da wesside!
