Default Does anyone here flush coolant the old fashioned way?

When I do my coolant flush I still do it the old way:

1. Drain Coolant

2. Add 100% water to cooling system, start engine and let idle for 5-7 minutes with heater on full blast.

3. Repeat process 4-5 times.

4. When I add coolant at the end, I put in a 60% mixture to make a roughly 50% mixture.

It's more time consuming, but very easy. This was the method stated in old repair books, and a mechanic buddy of mine said they did it this way for many years.

Just wondering if I'm the only weirdo doing it this way.

I also do it the "old fashion" way

I've heard rumors that modern day "flushing" using pressurized machines can damage heater cores, radiators, etc.. Anyone else hear of this?

I've always done it the old fashion way. Very simple maintenance.

Do you guys just drain it from the radiator? I can't seem to find the drain on the engine block.

Yes, all you need to do is drain from the radiator. No need to worry about any drain plugs on the block. You'll see with each flush that what you drain becomes clearer and clearer. Easier IMO, though not faster.

Or you can just disconnec tthe lower radiator hose. very easy and makes the drain much quicker.

I could never find the drain plugs, or they were inaccessible, so I did it old school, too. I didn't use tap water, though. I always have a stash of rain water in my basement that I use to water my plants (less dissolved minerals than tap), so I used that.

You can use the "compressed" air of a ShopVac to blow out an additional quart or two of coolant, allowing you to get more out with each drain. More details at:

Generally I use tap water pressurized to blow out the system followed by a shop vac on blower mode to flush anything left in it out. Seems to work well.

I don't use anything to suck or blow through the cooling system. I also always use distilled water, even for the flush. After doing this for the life of the car, my water pump was pristine when I replaced the timing belt at 95k miles.

Your timing belt was probably pristine, too. This forum is full of posts about the belts lasting way longer than 95K miles.

Yup, timing belt looked like it had many miles left. Although it looked like it was the right time to change out the tensioner and pulley. Water pump and thermostat looked great, no real buildup or corrosion.
