Default strange braking noise on 98 gs4

I've search all over the forum but nothing answered.
Scenerio:
1 - Once I start car and put the car in reverse, as soon as I brake while going in reverse a clunk is heard from the back. This seems to happen only when i first start the car.
2 - when wheel is fully turned at a stop and i brake, a loud clunk is heard from the front.
Any ideas?
Please help

Well...the clunk in reverse...does it happen as soon as you shift into reverse or when you stop? Perhaps it's your mount...

How old are the brake pads, and were the shims replaced the last time you changed the pads. Maybe it is just the pads re-seating themselves. It should stop when the pads warm up (after driving), everything expands, and they pads can no longer move.

front brake pads are fairly new ( 1 year) and the rear are quite old.
The clunking does appear to go away when the car is warmed up.
any other ideas?

Sounds like your control arm bushings are bad. Alternatively, check your trac as this has happened to me before. Something on my abs/trac was messing up and it was trying to stop one of the wheels from moving - acting like it was skidding.

Good luck,
Jonny

See my first guess is that its the bushings as well. But that wouldn't explain the noise going away after warm up. Pads on the other hand, i have seen this problem. Rear pads do not get changed as often as the fronts, so the pad movement over time "squishes those shims", causing excess play from the pad.

I could be wrong though, but this just seems very similar to what i have seen on other cars. Lexus is a fairly new car to me.

Which brake pads would u reccomend? and do they come with new shims?
Since I'm changing the pads, what else should I be changing?
Thanks!

I like axis ultimates. I just saw a set, front and rear going for less than $100 on ebay. I don't think they come with shims. Those you might be able to pick up at a local auto store, or toyota/lexus dealer. The only other thing I always do is resurface the rotors. I have a bunch of cars, so i just take my rotors to my mechanic and have them resurfaced for like $15 total. That is all i would do really. Don't buy any of that "brake grease/glue" that they try to push on you at the local auto stores, that crap just makes everything worse.

Damn, look below. I just got this off of Sewell Lexus site. It may be that your bushings are shot.

"Some symptoms of this deteriorated bushing problem are: Excessive tire wear; the inability to properly align the vehicle; audible "clunk" noises from floorboard area especially when turning or backing up; wandering and/or unstable steering especially at higher speeds; unstable braking; vibration at higher speeds. An increase in braking stability is also achieved due to the fact that the control arms will not shift or oscillate forward and backward under the extreme lateral loads experienced during heavy braking."

Please keep me posted on this. I hope this fixes my problem.
You're in NYC as well? Maybe we'll do a mini group buy and group install?
