joshoowa, I was just at Walmart the other day to check sales, and realized I may have misposted the $18.88 (now edited), which turns out, unless they raised it recently, was the 10W-30 full synth.; the 5W-30 is now ~$20.50, which is the grade we need. If they put the 5W-30 on sale I'm going to buy a few and just store it a while.
Remember the car takes 5.5 qts. at least according to my dealer so make sure you double check the level after the change and a brief warm up!

That is a total myth and misconception started my the oil manufacturers.
You can alternate back and forth as much as you would like.

synthetic oil use may be a myth as well, has anyone run 2 indentical cars in real life one with Dino, and one with Syn, and compared the effects?

I agree, syn is better for longer change periods, thus saving overall time and effort, plus is a better substance, but a car regularly changed with dino every 3K should function fine, especially newer cars

I have just started using Amsoil, which advertised 25k, but a knowledgeable distributor said to only go 7.5 k or 10k max as he has seen used oil analysis with this engine tear up the oil.

If the engine is doing this to a synthetic, I wonder has anyone performed a used oil analysis on dino on this engine at 3k OCI's?

Anyways, I will go no further than 7.5k and will stick with the toyota OEMs, which were recenetly changed to 90915-YZZD1. Someone mentioned they cut it up and said it was high quality construction but he did not post the pic of the filters internals. I pm'd him to see if he could send me pics of the filter.

Default More Anecdotal Synth. Info.

I checked oil level at about 2k after my second synth. change. Actually I had dealer put my Castrol in this time. Checked the oil with a tissue to clean the stick, then I tossed it aside. A couple weeks later I picked up the tissue to discard it and noticed that contrary to what I recall seeing with dino oil on wipes, the synth. appeared to only leave a light amber/yellow color in the wipe - there was no hint of black residue I could see at all even on close inspection! Whether a little black scum is important I cannot say but I like what I saw. This is not a controlled experiment but I believe the facts are true.

A suggestion: read the post on 12-10-03 by DREWGS4 about mobil 1.

Sorry I am not computer literate enough to post the thread or the link it cites.

Yup, and thanks. It gets kind of crazy with opinion and it's nice to see someone that sets out to nail the facts and then do a fine writeup.

Check it out.

Thumbs up

I just switched to the German brand Lex had mentioned called Liqui-Moly. 5W 40 weight 100% synthetic (it's distributed in North America by a company called Altrom www.altrom.com if anybody is intrested). Thought I'd try a bit thicker oil since I'm going on a very long trip all the way to the Florida Key's from Toronto. This stuff is quite expensive, but is suppose to be better than Mobil 1, Amsoil, Red Line & the like we shall see. I'm also gonna try "Liqui-Moly Pro Line synthetic fuel system cleaner" 500ml container and it's suppose to be as good as the fuel system cleaners they hook your car up to at a professional auto shop. I will post any findings good or bad when I return the last week of May. Has anybody else ever used these products?
