If that is the case, we don't need a government, do we?

Other than providing for a nation's defense and interstate or inter-region highways?

One of the cardinal reasons for choosing the Land Cruiser and its offspring(s) are inherent reliability during Toyota's service life of 250K miles and 15 years; that, and relatively ease of repair on or off-road if necessary. I'd predict both factors decreasing a bit as the trucks become more electronic and less mechanical.

We we have a LX450. Used to have a 470. Our manual says regular for the LX. My 4Runner states regular required but for optimal performance use premium. When we had a 470, it was premium fuel only.

What LX do you drive? Or do you have a Land Cruiser?
I would think the 5% U.S. content relates to port added options...like floor mats, hood protector ,glass breakage sensor, etc. I know the floor mats are made in the USA.

Honestly, it could be anything really. I would figure it could be those interior door handle pulls.

Here is the parts content from the NHTSA, as you will see, 5% of the LC200 parts is US/Can sourced.

Any how if one wishes to keep the car and want it run in tip top shape I'd think premium gas is better choice than regular gas to be on the safe side. Cleaner engine and no worrying about ping.( Some drivers may not even know when the engine is pinging)

You are correct. If there was engine pinging, the owner of the LX570 would/may have no idea. Knock sensors wear out as well I thing. It is a very interesting argument of how the LC200 does not require premium but the LX does. Another interesting thing would be why does the LC200 5.7/LX570 in world markets outside of the US make 362HP on premium fuel with e slightly different engine tune?

The owner of the LX would not hear or feel the pinging, as the knock sensor retards timing just enough to stop the pinging. A defective or worn out knock sensor will result in a CEL...e.g., code P03XX will show an issue with a knock sensor, the "XX" will populate with 2 numbers which identify which sensor is defective. Checking the sensor is simple...there should be no continuity between the sensor terminal and chassis ground...a test light or simple ohm meter is all that's needed.

Lower hp numbers in non-North American trucks is simply because of octane differences in other markets as an earlier post here indicates.

How could octane be lower in different parts of the world be the factor ? The 5.7 is rated for 91 in all applications outside of the US. 87 is not a typical gas option outside the Americas. Also, the torque peak is tuned 400 rpm lower in non US 5.7 models. 3200 vs 3600 for USA

Different cam shaft/sprocket design? Torque peak coming early mean timing advance is more aggressive? In old days I used to play with timing advance springs in the distributor. Lighter springs advanced
timing at faster rate to gain max torque early. Now this things are all under electronics control.

Check posts #52-54 in this thread.

And I'll add...what kind of fuel MBZ recommends, suggests, or requires may be interesting, but I'd opine it's completely irrelevant to the discussion here. MBZ's are not (hardly) designed for a 15 year 250K life cycle...not in the slightest.
