If you don't mind expensive bills frequently so the GL550 doesn't have a problem. While the LX is a car that insure you, even if something expensive needs changing it will never go wrong again. A Lexus when driven and taken care of correctly it will last forever and when trying to sell it nobody will run away of it.
In conclusion both cars are great but the LX is the car to go due to being safe on your wallet and at the same time looks like a Luxury SUV while the GL looks like a family Mercedes full if children ready for soccer practice.
Have you owned any MB vehicle? Are talking about from you own experience? Just wondering. I have owned Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, Audi in the past. All has it's own good and bad aspect. In any of those cars I have not run into major issues. One thing I always look after any car I owned. I don't care even if relibility is an issue. Reliability is not priority one. But then I replace cars after 4 to 6 years for different one. Previous gen. M series was proven series as far as reliability goes compared to current GL series. You mean LX is safer than GL? How and why?

very simple. Ask yourself this question: do I want to spend more time at the service center or behind the wheel enjoying the vehicle? If you like the free coffee and pastries once a month, buy MB, if you're ok having them twice a year for regylar maintenance buy the LX. Also if you ever want to see any money again when you resell but the LX.

Human being is emotional being. We don't always function with logic. If one wants to drive a particular car (s)he will get it by all means even if regretting after driving it for a while. If OP is leaning to GLE550, how about looking at last year model of ML550. They are quite reliable, hard to come by. In my case I found CPO one from a MB dealer. With reasonable cost I purchased 3 year extended warranty which covers everything but wear items like brake pads, tires, etc. I tried brand new GLE550 too but to me older ML550 was more solid. The vehicle had one year warrant left plus 1 year CPO coverage so total 5 years' coverage. Then I'll be looking for another vehicle if I am allowed to drive yet. After 5 years I'll be 83 YO.

Anything German is an awesome choice (former S8, S class and 3 series owner) so long as you are under warrantee (unless crazy repair bills are your kind of thing).

Of course. People buying those cars full well know what they are getting into. If they can afford those cars, they can afford repair bills. In my case I always add extended warranty. When it's nearing end of warranty I get rid of them. But most of time they last long time maybe because I don't drive like maniac on the road any more. Or go to a well equipped private garage run by German fellows. They know German cars
even better than those service techs. at the dealership. Cost is much reasonable too. They have all the equipment dealer service shop has as well. In my city there is one outfit called 'Motor Werke' which provides excellent service. They only service BMW. Next door is another place who services VAG and MB vehicles.

Traded it September of 2016 and got $16,000 for it after hard negotiations. I don’t know why anyone would buy a second Mercedes. One year alone, my repairs were well over $10,000 and that’s at an Indy shop, not a dealer. I bought my 15 year old daughter a 2008 GX470 with 140,000 miles on it 6 months early just to have a spare car in the garage for all the times the Benz was in the shop. It was easily the worst purchase in my 48 year life I have ever made. Mercedes is a piece of junk, and an expensive one at that. I have had three Tundras, two GX470’s and now an LX570 and I couldn’t be happier. My two previous Tundras went 250,000 miles with zero issues and zero days at a shop. The only reason for trading them is is a wanted the newer model. My 2012 Tundra with 240,000 miles traded in for $19,000.
Let me guess, dealer price:
4 airbags: $7000
intake manifold: $3600
AC compressor: $2300
Transmission conductor plate: $2500
the indy shop price was pretty good...
