Replacing heater hoses in 2001 Lexus LX470
We were told we need to replace our heater hoses in our 2001 Lexus LX470. What's the best way to do that? And any ideas what a Lexus dealer vs an independent mechanic would charge? They say we need 6 hoses replaced and 2 T fittings between the rear of the engine and firewall. Should we replace the clamps at the same time, too?

Have a look at any of the heater hose T threads in ih8mud 100/470 forum for DIY descriptions, pictures and part numbers. This job is easily completed with simple hand tools (cheap mini vice grips are handy). Your constant tension hose clamps shouldn't need replacing. This is a 20 minute job but I suppose a dealer would charge their hourly minimum + parts so you'd be looking at maybe $200?
Many, including myself, have found their Ts crumble when touched (03 LX @ 113k miles) and if/when they fail you'll loose coolant quickly and potentially cook your engine.

PADDO nailed it. It's not mentioned in either owner's manual or FSM. Hose T's will slowly disintegrate and you do not want broken T pieces in the cooling system. Hose clamps can be reused. What helped me were 4 long, long-nose pliers from HF with various jaw angles. Not where I normally buy tools, but around $20 for all 4 it makes the job easier. Drain about a quart or 2 of coolant from the radiator and you should spill 3-4 drops when you do the hoses and T's. T's cam be replaced with Brass Pex T's...more info on mud in the 100 series section.
