First off, I want to say that I did a thorough search of CL for all posts on Nav upgrades, and read through all of them but could NOT find answers to what I am looking for, hence creating this thread. So please bear with me....

My 2003 LX came with Gen2 Nav 02.1. Recently, I purchased the 05.1 release from lexus-parts.com and installed it (real easy). After the install, I did not notice any real upgrade change, however the DVD version now states "v 05.1 (contact your dealer for updated map)". Nothing changed on screen, all my marked points remained, my registered sites remained unchanged. Then I noticed that on a 2005 LX470, with a Gen4 Nav, the screen is a lot different to mine.

So if one upgrades from 02.1 to 05.1, do one get the same look and feel of the Gen 4 or Gen 5 versions ? Or is the upgrade only about POIs and nothing else ? How would you know that the upgrade was successful ? Can a car with Gen2 + upgraded s/w to Gen 5 not have same look-n-feel ? What gives ???? I am really bummed about this upgrade, and remain totally confused what it really is about, besides POI increase(s) if any. I don't believe I have seen a side-by-side shot of the Gen 2/3 Nav versus Gen 4/5 Navs. I'll put another pic for the Gen2/3 Nav in the next post just to compare.

Your thoughts and help on clarifying this for me would be much appreciated.

Most of these Nav questions were asked already from the GX forum, and the unfortunate answer is that the DVD only upgrades the database, not the ENGINE, (eg, look and feel of the interface).

So you get the new road names, restaurants, amusment parks, ATMS but don't expect the newer interface...

Thanks.... seems like its all about maps and POI updates only. Oh well.... Let's hope its worth the $259 I paid for the update....
