Exposing the chrome beneath the black paint

I have a 1999 Lx 470. I saw a tip a couple of weeks ago that said there is chrome beneath the black paint on the grill. I was interrupted and lost track of the information. Can anyone help me with this. I think I remember something about a citristripper but nothing else.

thanks,
Ed

Hello All. This post is to confirm the rumors that there is chrome under the black paint on your grills. I was very very nervous about this but rubbed off a small corner and saw that pristine glow of chrome. I know some of you hate chrome, but I wanted the 06-08 grill without replacing and repainting the parts under the headlights.

Parts needed:
Aircraft remover
5-7 hard bristle toothbrushes
5 childrens sized toothbrushes
Painters plastic drop cloth
masking tape
towel

First lift the hood and place the drop cloth across the whole engine bay, draping over the complete front bumper (this will protect all parts from the splashing of the remover on the bristles of the brush.

Second, mask off the grill surround and drop cloth the hood

Third, put aircraft remover on the toothbrush and go to town on the grill (you cant rub hard enough). I tried the safe non toxic citris stuff, but took freaking hours, where the aircraft took seconds...just be smart and careful and you will be fine. This is more art than gung-ho!

After hours(approx 3) the grill will be all chrome. Just wipe off all the residue you can, being very careful not to get it on any other painted surface besides the grill. It will destroy ur paint in less than a minute.

If you like the chrome grill, it works great and looks great. Just take ur time. Sorry I dont have pics of the in job in progress. I was in the zone.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to try it. I have an Idea though. I saw a LX with a mesh job with the LX screwed to the center. It looks great, but I love those two bars that run parallel and attach to the LX in the center of the stock grill. I have exposed the chrome on those bars and now I'm removing the other bars and using black mesh in the openings so that the chromed bars stand out. I'll post pics when I'm done.
