Hello-

New owner of a 1994 LS400, working my way through the typical maintenance stuff.

Could someone confirm the location of the A/C filter? I did a search and found nothing for the 94 model, closest info I could get was for an ES300 that showed it to the right of the accelerator pedal (LH drive models). Is the location the same?

In the 97 LS400 the filter is down by the glove compartment but can't find anything like that on the 94...except some small panel on the left wall of the glovebox that I haven't opened yet.

its the panel under the glove compartment, its held in by 3 clips an once u take it out, ur going to see 2 "wing" nuts, and thats holding in the cabin filter. remove the wing nuts and then take out the 2 filters, one front and one rear.

There are 2 panels, one immediately below the glovebox and one below that is down by the floor. You want to remove the lowermost panel. I worked along the upper edge of the lowermost panel. There are 3 clips like you said. They're tricky to find but the innermost is about 3.5" from the innermost edge of the panel. There are slots for a (taped) screwdriver. Found them using a putty knife gently prying until I could see the slots. After you get the three clips then rest of removal is obvious. To anyone trying it, go slowly so you don't crack anything.

I pulled the filters and they're dirty. I don't think PO changed them at all, for 150K miles. I'm ordering new ones, can I run the a/c with no filters, temporarily, until the replacements arrive?

pretty sure u can, not gonna run filterless for a while so a couple days wont hurt.

 

Are there any aftermarket filter replacements available?

I just took mine out and a bunch of dirt fell out with the filthy filters. Doesn't the air go through the main air filter first?? I am sure they were never replaced in 14+ years/165k miles.

 

what "main air filter"
there are 2 air filters, one for the Air Conditioning and one for the engine, and no, they are NOT interconnected.

there have been quite a few people who double stack cut up HOME AC air filters and use them for their AC filters

 

Yeah I read about that but was hoping there would be a less ghetto way of doing it, but I guess it would end up being a higher quality filter if you made it yourself with good material.
I drove to work yesterday in Butte county where all the CA fires are happening and I was choking on the smoke that was getting in my car.

btw, I did mean the engine air filter, but I realize they can't be connected.

It is very simple to replace the cabin filter. Sit in the front passenger seat, and right where your knees nearly hit the dash, remove the cover below the glove compartment that is obvious by a large joint. Just use a flat screwdriver to carefully pry the top of the cover that is held in place by 3 backside clips. Then carefully bend the cover down, and pull it off the lower 2 clips. Easy. Then reach under the dash, and find the 2 wingnuts that hold the air filter support in place, and remove them. Pull off the support, and voila! you feel the bottom of an air filter. Then simply pull it down, and you will have 2 connected old small filters in your hand. Installation is simple, simply push the new filters into the plenum-they only fit one way, then repeat the reinstallation of the filter support and cover.
