LS460s from 2014+ have a 10K oil change interval in the manual.

Oil is cheap. I always change oil at every 5K miles for all my vehicles. I use Mobil1 extended oil filter for other cars and Toyota OEM oil filter for my LS

Sorry to hijack this thread but I was curious, I recently bought a '13 LS460 RWD SWB used and found out that the previous owner (and first only) had all its servicing done at the dealership (every 5k KM consistently). Going through the servicing records, I couldn't help but notice that the engine oil they used is 5W40 (Shell Helix Ultra, which is pretty much Pennzoil Ultra/Platinum from what I have gathered).

Should I be alarmed about this? because from what I've read its only either 0W20 or 5W40.

Then again, I'm based in south-east asia so we don't have winter at all, mainly just summer and its blazing hot af (24 to 36 °C or 75.2 to 96.8 °F). Could this be a factor?

Any thoughts appreciated.

well aware of what/what not the ls460 has - been around cars, as well racing competitively for 20+ years. A high quality oil like PUP doesn’t deplete after 5K miles - if i was going to be changing the oil every 5k then I’ll stick to regular pennzoil platinum syn and not “ultra”. Owners manual recommends 10k oil changes and not 5k.

Guess the owners manual is dishonest at 10k?

affects fuel economy, measure you dte from a tank full between 5w and 0w - you’ll see the difference.

The 0W or 5W does not make a difference for warm weather, the 0W/5W is the winter or start up rating and the lower the number that gives the best/widest performance so the 0W gives the same/better protection/flow as the 5W so a 0W on cold startup is pretty much always going to be superior then a 5W oil and not have any drawbacks, it is the second number that is for hot/summer weather, a hotter engine run at its normal/max temp, the higher that number, generally the more protection/better performance at higher temperatures or higher engine temps so if you wanted more protection/better protection at higher summer temps/engine is at normal or higher operating temp/a harder run engine you would go with a higher second number like 0W 30 or 5W 30.

Being in NJ you should be fine with 0W 20, maybe if I was driving the car hard hard or taking it to the track racing it I would switch to a 0W 30. If I lived in a state with really hot Springs and Summers and drove the car hard/tracked it I would also probably go with a 0W 30 if I intend to keep it a long time and provide the max protection. The main reason automakers are switching to 20 weight oil from previously 30 weights is for the slightly better fuel economy it offers.

So you don't need to switch to a 5W oil as it won't have any better performance in hot weather nor do I think you need to switch to a 30 weight with a LS in NJ.

I would think a 40 weight oil would be too thick for a LS460 engine but you are in a very hot country so maybe it is different, I would think they would have just recommended a 0W or 5W 30 oil for a hotter climate instead of going all the way to a 40W. If Lexus recommends 40W oil in your region for a LS I would not be alarmed at all, just kind of surprised they recommend such a thick oil for a LS460 engine anywhere.

Thanks for the insight.

In any case, an interesting thing happened, Changed the oil (due 5km), used 5w30 amsoil xl + amsoil filter so it was a notch down from 5w40. Car ran weird after that service. A few misfirings and car ran noticably rougher, there were even some bobbles. Didn't wanna take the risk so I towed it back to the indie. They ran obd and it had some minor errors like not communicating etc. They cleared the codes and we drove it out for another test and the everything was fine. It was basically a so wtf happened moment and no issues...yet.
