I had this same problem. Make sure your coolant level is correct and that you have no leaks. Sounds weird, but trust me. I discovered a leak in my radiator and once I replaced it and filled up the coolant, the a/c problem (and the overheating problem) were fixed. Good luck

Also, did you break the cabin air filter door? This is a common issue. If the door wasn't already opened when you opened the glove box, and you forced it open, it's probably off the track and you'll need to fix it. This could be the issue as well.

I second Nick's reply. The culprit is very likely an incorrect fitment of the cabin air filter, either with the door closed or the plastic piece put on last not fitted anally perfect.

Mines does this also. If I come back and start the car in a couple of minutes the AC comes right back on but if I leave the car sitting for more than 15 minutes I have to wait for the auto light to go off before the AC comes back on. It's really annoying on these hot summer days. My filter door works correctly and the filter is in the right position.

I had the same problem.
My filter door was open when I put in the new filter as is required.
The culprit turned out to be that I did not pay very close attention to getting a prefect fit seal on the plastic piece that
goes over the opening after the new filter is installed. The car somehow senses an air leak there and is confused or something.
I am just suggesting to not trust yourself and remove that plastic cover and install it again? Can't hurt to try it.
Worst case take it too a dealer and tell them what it going on and ask them to check the filter installation.

I did not think this was that Important. I have a module plugged into the back of my head unit that provides USB capabilities for music to be controlled through the steering wheel and displayed on the screen. The cord snakes up behind the glove box and under that plastic piece so it does not sit flush. I never thought about it but I was changing the air filter earlier today and moved the cord to run over the plastic piece so it could sit flush. Not because I thought it would fix the AC issue but because it was always annoying when I was putting the plastic piece back on. I guess I will see tomorrow If it fixes the AC.

One possible problem that no one mentions, but that could be a factor, is it is possible the refrigerant level is just slightly under-charged. Toyota/Lexus makes the best factory air bar none and the A/C on my 2002 Camry still works mostly untouched 204,000 miles later - BUT I had this same general issue as all are describing here i.e. A/C won't blow cold until it's run several minutes. When this happens it can mean the A/C system can't pressurize the refrigerant quickly enough and needs to build up pressure first, which is the first sign you may have an under-charge of refrigerant.

Since it makes perfect sense a very small amount of refrigerant might leak out after 20 years (BTW the refrigerant in your A/C system, when installed with an in-line filter-dryer, never wears out and never needs changing. A/C problems are rarely refrigerant-related only if it leaks out or gets contaminated from a component failure), I tried the easiest and cheapest fix first. And bought a refrigerant recharge kit from the auto parts (the kind that does include the pressure gauge but DOES NOT contain leak stop chemicals) and spent a half hour doing a minor top up. That was several years ago and A/C still blows cold.
