Default Gas or exhaust smell.... what could it be?

hey guys.
So.. say I am in my parking spot, I turn on the car, if my ac is set to take air from the outside...I will get a strong smell of gas or some sort of exhaust smell in the car.

I have had this car since June or July... I had issues with the steering rack, I now I have refurbished one on there.... but I have not had any codes with the engine.

I think it must be some sort of exhaust leak.... but I am worried it might be a fuel pump or something what are things to look out for?

THANKS

There is a distinct smell between raw gas and exhaust fumes but I have a few questions that need to be answered.
Is the smell only on cold start up?
Any drips under the car?
Could it be some other car in the area leaking fuel?
Any trouble codes?
Have you changed the cabin filter?
Did you check the entire exhaust system for any leaks?

Chased that problem for almost a year. Had shops look at it and everything. Turned out to be loose rear spark plugs in my rx300.

Good luck!

Seems that way but I will try and pay more attention

Any drips under the car?

no drips

Could it be some other car in the area leaking fuel?

nope

Any trouble codes?

no trouble codes

Have you changed the cabin filter?

yes

Did you check the entire exhaust system for any leaks?

not yet figure I’d ask here before getting some Indy ship to do some checks

Since no codes are being thrown, smoke test the exhaust system for leaks and like Fred said: "check spark plugs for looseness." Any leaks with the evap system (gas cap leak, leaking hoses, faulty valves, etc) would throw a code because these cars are very smart. I would also suggest opening the hood and do a "sniff test" (with your nose) for any gas leaks when you normally smell the gas.

So recently due to the weather I’ve had to let outside air into the car to defog etv it is the smell of gas, not exhaust it is especially prominent if I have to let outside air in when I first start the car, could this be due to the fuel rail issue that’s a safety recall I have not had it done...but soon

both of my 460's have a very strong exhaust smell on start up , im parked in an underground so its more noticeable

I think its just the way they are , at least in my case that's what I think

What kind of issues were u having with the steering rack?Did it fail? was it making whining sounds?

How much did the labour cost to put the new one in ?

Thanks

Check that both fuel pumps are not leaking, this is a common issue on these cars and there are a few DIYs on here about how to check for and tackle it.

check for my steering rack threads but essentially the rubber boot failed there was a tear causing water to get into the motor, I’ve had to put in a refurbished one, yes whenever yoi turn the steering wheel there will be. Distinct whirling or squeaking that’s not the tires. And one day the power steering just failed, I believe rockauto or something similar has refurb racks.

I live in Ukraine so labour costs nothing, something like 10 bucks or 15 bucks an hour.

Correct, on both valve covers. Check this thread and then look for any leaks from those gaskets --> https://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls-...placement.html

so I am guessing when they do the valve spring replacement in the recall these would have to come off? And I can reasonably ask them to change the gaskets?
