Unusual Breakdown
Just passing this along for information. Had an absolutely pristine 2004 LS430, put 53000 miles on it. Never a problem. Decided at 61000 miles and 12 years of age to replace timing belt, water pump and serpentine belt. Lexus recommends 90000 or, I think, seven years for the timing belt. Decided to do it for peace of mind. Did it. All was well. Kept all the parts that came off. Like new. Looked perfect. Still have them.
Here's the story. Live in Florida. My wife insisted we leave for hurricane Irma in September 2017, inspite of an incredibly secure house with a generator, storm shutters recent build etc. We left. One in a million, car broke down. Overheated. No services, absolutely nothing open. Shortening the story, whole family in tow. With INCREDIBLE luck and expense I solved the problem. Took a couple of years off my life. By the way,we left at 2:30 AM.
Turns out the impeller in the water pump broke clean in half. Twelve thousands miles on the new water pump. Took the pump, impeller etc. to the installing dealer. Lexus reimbursed me $625 for replacing the pump. A lot less than my total expenses, but I am not complaining. Went on to purchase another LS some months later. Things happen.
My wife promises we will never leave again. Believe me we won't.
