Well, I would like to add, that it seems these cars do appear often for sale. Seems like they hold their value and are one hell of a car.
I personally would not spend 72,000 for a new one, but just think of the quality product that you are getting for a fifth of what they cost new.
I think too much is said about the age of the car. If it has had good care it should be worth every penny of 14000 to 15000.
As for repairs, well it is a 11 year old car and things can fail. I say buy it or wait for another to come up for sale. I love the one I have.

Its a great car, but if you're buying an older one you HAVE to understand the potential repair needs and be repaired for them. That car could cost you $1,500 for a repair at any moment. If you're okay with that then hey, you're driving an awesome car for $15k.
The problem is people cannot think "Hey, I can finance a $15k car. I have no money lying around for repairs, why would I buy a Corolla or a Yaris when I can buy this 11 year old LS460?". Well, the reason you might choose that Yaris is because you can't pay to repair the car when it breaks. Does that make sense?
What you DON'T want to be is that guy making payments on a car thats broken down and you can't pay to repair it.

While I hear what you are saying, you have no clue what you are buying from craigslist. i have checked this car's service history on the lexus website. Yes, I know the dealer is going to make
money if I buy it even close to their inflated price, but it's a really nice example, and I would like to have it. i am gambling on letting it sit til the end of the month. this 2007 machine has some features
my 2016 highlander does not have despite it's price tag. It would probably be a reasonably safe buy for years to come.

cost of repairs is a big one quite honestly. I know what my Highlander costs each month, no surprises, even though I do not own it. i could keep leasing since I can write it off,
BUT, i feel like I prefer to own something and put that car note money into my mutual funds each month. Then again, buying anything used, over a certain amount is a monthly payment and repairs.
a 16K 2014 Venza is probably a safer buy for me since it is big enough to haul my dog around without me having to buy a beater to go along with the LS.

Anything financed is not owned. It is owned by the bank until note is paid off. That is one reason to lease, besides not having to pay
sales tax in one chunk. It is really a catch 22...If I had 100,000 cash the last thing I would buy is a car that cost that much. I would buy the nice used Lexus for 15,000 to 20,000 and Bank the balance.

Precisely, and even at the asking price for this 07 LS, i can have it paid for in two years. or I can go lease a new Golf Sportwagen AWD for probably $300 a month once this Highlander is done. I wouldn't spend $100K on a car either. I'd still buy $12K used car and invest the rest of it.

This thread has turned into a financial advice column. Cash, finance or lease just do what fits your particular situation at the time of purchase. I don't believe everyone is as financially responsible as they make out or this country would not be burdened with so much debt IMO.

Here's the thing about sedan vs SUV. I miss having an SUV in the family. The minivan gives you the stuff hauling ability, but it lacks the style and the go anywhere nature of an SUV. I would never choose to drive it, which I did when my wife drove the family SUV before our kids were born.
I really struggled before I got my current LS about getting an SUV. I drove a bunch, Range Rover, Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Lexus LX, Mercedes GLS, I really tried to get into the idea of driving an SUV every day but I just couldnt. 9.5 times out of 10 the sedan suits me fine, and even the most comfortable SUVs are not quite as comfortable as a big LWB flagship luxury sedan...so I pulled the trigger on another one.
If you really want the LS and your dog is the only issue, you can figure that out.

I need to buy one of those big SUVs for family stuff and I always browse the web for an older inexpensive Tahoe circa 2005-10. I actually own a new 2005 and it was very comfortable and good on gas when on the highway. I was very impressed with it. The inside materials were hard and plastic but the leather was ok. I would not want to drive one everyday though. Like Steve said they feel too cumbersome.

yep, when you buy one of these, you almost have to buy a beater car to keep it from daily abuse from kids and daily life. My sales keeps emailing me. i know she wants to sell it.
