Exclamation Remanufactured Transmission costs

My transmission caused me problems after a long trip from Ohio to Florida. It went into limp mode and my check engine light and trac control light were both on. Had it towed to a nearby Lexus dealer. He read the codes and told me I needed a new transmission. I opted for the reman transmission but the cost seems high. He quoted $11,500.00 installed.
does anyone have experience with replacing a transmission in a 2010 LS 460 AWD?

Ouch! How many miles on the car?

Used transmission should be between $600 & $1500

e.g. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Automatic-T...2/142629949392 for $600

Labor maybe another $1500 max.

I don't see how this can really get all the way up to $11.5K.

BMW7, I saw the eBay linked transmission. They offered to get me a used transmission from a yard but I opted for the factory remanufactured tranny. I fully expect to get another 100k miles out of this car so I went for the best part to help me get there.
i agree with you though. How can it possibly cost so much. But having exactly zero experience with transmission repairs and being 1000 miles from home I feel like a lamb being lead to the slaughter.

Did you ever flush transmission fluid or did drain & refill? If yes, how many time and at what miles? Just curious.

I rarely saw transmission failures mentioned on the LS430 board but see noticeably more instances on LS460 board.

BMW7,
I did not have a flush/refill done. The error codes the computer showed were related to solenoid failure. The Lexus service rep told me they did not do any sort of rebuilds only replacements. He referred me to another transmission shop to see if it could be rebuilt but that shop checked with their parts suppliers and were told they couldn’t get the parts.

If the amounts BMW7 quoted above are in the ballpark, I would just go that route. His totals are ~ $3k vs. $11.5k. There are no guarantees that the car will last another 100k miles. If you go the $3k route you could still replace the transmission another 2+ times. My car will never see another dealership again, as it is out of warranty. Try and source those parts and get a close indy shop to do the repair. For me, I just can't justify that cost. Please keep us posted on the end results. Thanks and good luck!!

For that price difference, I would tell Lexus of Melbourne to go pound sand. I would order the parts through one of the above links and just rent a car. That's just me, I'm cheap

My long term independent shop mentioned that a trans back flush fixes the stuck solenoids normally. Steve at luxury motorcars in Monrovia, ca. The luxlink guy.

Sure sounds like I am getting totally screwed over by my friendly neighborhood Lexus dealer. Maybe other Lexus owners will see this thread and be fore warned.
If your Lexus IS having problems with it’s transmission AND you are out of warranty then DO NOT take it to your Lexus Dealer for service. Go anywhere else with experience in rebuilding or repairing transmissions. If I can prevent one fellow Lexus owner from getting thoroughly screwed over, as I have, then it will make it worth it.......almost.

I would run it to a different shop. I bet you it’s a solenoid failure. Maybe $200-300 fix

Anything is possible when you are using the dealership, I think they have competitions with each other who can charge the most outrageous prices and gouge customers the most on repairs.
