Default Consumer Reports

Just got the (an?) online version of the April 2018 Consumer Reports annual auto issue. The reliability section is very disappointing- only includes reliability data for 2015, 2016 and 2017 (and half of the 2017 entries are empty)! Does anybody have any version with the complete 7 year histories that are usually published?

My print copy looks like it pretty much always has...7 year histories all there, except for models younger than 7 years of course...but I have not checked my online version...any particular car you're looking at?

Just generally looking (plus, I like to keep an eye out for potential problem areas in the cars I own, although the only one that would show up now is my LS).

I think it's their way of bait-and-switching you to pay for the print versions also.

My online CR has complete reliability information from 2000 through 2016 for the LS.

Here is a cropped photo of the April 2018 magazine page showing the reliability of the LS model years:

This report can be misleading. It is based on data consumer reports have and not necessarily actual data.
e.g. Paint/Trim issue is red for 07 & 08 but green/light green for 09-12. It is probably because there was a recall for melting dash/armrests but the problem was never really fixed. For other years owners probably fixed it somewhere else and consumer reports do not have data or owners learned to live with it.

Same with suspension, 07 should be red just like 08-10. It doesn't make sense why 07 should not be red. If anything, 10 should be orange instead of red.

If there more detailed data available for the issues that contribute to these ratings? I don't have the subscription or never had it. Just curious.

The data is based on the responses to surveys Consumer Reports sends to its subcribers. One can’t expect each response to have the same level of accuracy and/or objectivity, but it is “actual data”. I think more detail is available, but am not sure of how to access it. If true, it orobably involves paying for their premium auto services.

IMO, CR probably is one of the more reliable databases for this type of information.

I would agree as the surveys are random (ie not just people volunteering negative experiences). Interesting, though, that the 2016 took a slump in overall used car prediction/rating.

I'm sure the surveys aren't random, I get a ton of emails and reminders every year to participate. But you're right, no idea why '16 ratings dropped when there were no major updates...

The car reliability survey is sent to subscribers of Cr.org and subscribers of Consumer Reports magazine:
