Ah, but you want firmer shifts because the transmission will last longer. Clutch wear occurs only during shifts, so the gentler they are, the more friction material is used.

When I rebuild the 46RE in my '98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L, I'm going to put the most aggressive shift kit in it. I want it to borderline slam into gear. It's a truck, I expect it to be somewhat uncouth. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice truck, but with solid axles front and rear, it's most definitely a truck.

Hard to believe it and the RX300 were equal in size and price back in 1998. They could not be more different. The RX300 is very Y2K whereas the ZJ is very 1971.

In fact, I wish there were a way to replace the LS's transmission computer with one from an IS-F, as it's the same transmission. I want lightning fast, very crisp shifts when in "S" mode.

Same here, just a 500 RPM flare on the 2-3 shift once a day on cold mornings before the engine and tranny have fully warmed up. This is on a 2013. I wonder if the software/firmware updates are applicable to my MY. Will need to check with my indie at the next service interval...not that I have any complaints with the car's current performance.

Have you had any flares since you were updated?
100% NO. This update has completely cured that flare. Although the flare wasn't really an issue for me (since it only happened first shift in the morning), it's nice not to have to anticipate it every day on my way to work.
