I did not remove the axle. I pirchased my own clamp as well as the grease and grease gun. I first cleaned the surrounding area of all grease and then cut the old clamp off. Then I slipped the special needle that that you need to purchase for the gun underneath the boot and injected the grease. I cleaned the extra grease up and put the new clamp on. This was back in the summer and The leak has not reoccurred.

I read about this method somewhere but was a little hesitant in piercing the boot even though it seemed to work for that individual.
