Notice the upper flange still bolted to the car above?

After we got it out we could see that the upper flange with the three bolts is attached to the body of the strut by some hardened rubber. It had cracked apart. This explain why the actuator had become detached from the strut. It seems that the strut came apart and the actuator would have been pulled down into the fender well and got pulled apart.

Whoa! Where did this car come from, the rust belt?

Though, it appears you found the root of the problem.

Car fax showed it had been between Manhattan and Florida somwhere.
Cant understand how they put these together with a bonded rubber joint somehow.
I would think that it would be better to have a solid weldednjoint with some isolation at the flange area above.
Can wait to see if the rear right side is the same issue.
With just this one installed it’s already doing better on the bounce test.

After the Rear struts were installed the ride got better.
Still was hearing some rattle from the front area.
Decided to removed the front strut caps to see whT it looked like. BOTH sides had the actuators detached from the struts.
Harness was connected on both and it must have rotating the spindle but since it’s not engaged to the strut it was doing anything.
Both actuators seemed to have some dark grease smudge on the spindle area as if the strut had shot some gunk out and it stuck to the actuator.
Actuators also looked like they had some minor damage to the plastic near where ththey spindle comes out.
Can only imagine it’s been bouncing around inside that area for a few miles.
Ordered the other pair of front struts from the same place I got the rear ones a few weeks ago.
I’m imagining it’s going to be broken also as I think this is what’s causing the actuators to break loose from the struts.
Also noticed some oil puddled into the top center cavity of the strut.
So to recap, all four of our actuators were not working due to a harness disconnected and or they had dis engaged from the strut entirely.
So they were stuck on what ever the last setting was once it broke off and they were not even working much at all even after that.
Learning a lot on this car about struts.

Oh, man. Sorry to hear that, man. Not cool at all.

BTW, you're going to be positively AMAZED when it's finally correct.

it’s a bummer. Turns a decent deal into a okay deal I guess.
Miya my sons car and I pulled the trigger on it so I’m eating the cost myself. He’s 19 and in college and is looking to me to make it right.

Good afternoon Phil,
Did the new air struts correct the problems you were having? I recently bought a 2007 and the ride is very 'bouncy' as well. I also have code C1734 for the air suspension. I'm hoping its just a strut damper actuator, as the struts appear to be holding air fine. Thanks!

Thanks for the info! Apparently someone took the 19” wheels off at some point, but I do have the Touring package. I wonder if my red calipers original to this package as well? They have “LSportline” on them.

The red color is done by the previous owner. It's comes black and it says Lexus on it . 6 pot front sport vs 4 pot front non-sport .

Basically the only way sure fire way to tell if you have the touring package is on the Lexus drivers site. My car for example has everything but that which is odd...coz you splash for everything have the vgrs pcs etc and then not the bigger brakes I guess the 19” rims were ugly but I would have gotten them anyways just for the bigger brakes

Well the calipers are bigger and you must have the 19” rims to clear it .

The touring pkg has larger rotors and they were sold in 2008.

really? Well there goes my plans for bigger rotors and callipers because I definitely cannot run 19s with 50/55 (non stock size) here in the winter the ice build up will make manoeuvring impossible. I will have to run 18’s even that is a bit of a problem...
