Drove a Genesis G90 today, thoughts vs the LS460

These modern turbo 6s are making V8 power...everything but the S Class in the segment has a standard V6 and optional V8 now.

Just drove by the house again this morning after coffee and yep, G80s, my mistake.
The trailer wasn't attached anymore, otherwise I would have taken a picture.
In any case, they have two identical G80s, same color and all.

When you pop the hood 6 plugs get replaced and there are twin turbos. It takes a lot of power to move a 4,700lbs vehicle. Therefore the 5,115lbs 550e is fitted with hybrid hardware and edges the 740i to 60mph (5.2 vs. 5.4). In a world of one-uppin' the other guy Merc doesn't disappoint. Now when you compare coupes the SL450 (3,800lbs v6TT no hybrid) has near 1/2 a second advantage to 60 over the 740i convertible. It's cool that you don't have an appreciation for the realm or air of an S. But when you drive an S you don't expect a compromise even when you choose a v6

I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about. What I said was that every flagship car except the S Class comes standard with a V6. The LS doesn't either, but I think it will when it's refreshed. I said that as an example of why Genesis chose to make the 3.3L 6 the standard engine. All of those base 6s including that 6 in the Genesis do a fine job of motivating those cars, and their performance is similar to the performance of the NA V8 in the LS460. The hybrid S Class is not the standard S Class. They have an available V6 hybrid for the same starting money which is unique, but that's not the same as a regular V6 base engine as you see in other vehicles in the segment, including in the G90. The vast majority of S Classes are V8 S550s, and the hybrid S550e is not considered a lesser version of the S Class. As a 740 is as example.
Not sure how you took that to mean I had made any sort of value judgement about the S Class. I have said repeatedly I believe the S Class is the unquestioned leader in this segment, and that if anything it's a half segment above because of its higher transaction price.

Thank you for the G90 post
I drove the 2018 G90 six today. I pretty much agree with everything you said. The dealer told me that the differences in the 8 cylinder were the engine, horsepower, tv in the back seat, heated and cooled back seat. none of those interest me. It is stickers at 67k. I loved the heads up display of speed and speed limit. You can move the display to different places on the window. Also the 'birds eye camera of your car when backing is nice. It splits the scree between rear camera and bird's eye. When you shift into drive, it shows a forward camera until the car starts moving. I agree with the steering wheel comment.

Mercedes seems to be getting in line with standard 6 cyl. engines on S Class. The new S450 has a 3 liter v-6 making somewhere around 365 hp. The LS500 may turn out to have a power advantage with the base engines.

They have great lease deals on the S450 too, I was quoted $1,150 with 0 down, which is awesome on a $108,000 example. Might just be my next car.

I work at the Mercedes plant down here in good ol Alabama and can lease a S550 for around $900 a month with $0 down or get 23% off if I buy. I've been considering the lease just to see what it's like but I'm pretty happy with my 2010 Ls460L. Even though I like the new look of the 2018 LS500 it would hard not to pass up on the discount on buying a new S class.
