I was getting reacquainted with the LS 460 in the garage and figured I would do the trunk molding.
Do you really see an improvement? If anything, we need rubber molding for the side edges of the trunk.
Hi Fto1, thanks for installing the trim piece and testing its effect. I don't see any improvement. Was it easy to apply? I am wondering why Lexus started installing it. I take my car to a brushless car wash with high pressure jets. Perhaps, the trim will reduce the drips by sealing that edge better.
Thanks for doing that FatherTo1. When I looked at the piece on the car above, I didn't think it would help with the water dripping. The piece doesn't cover the whole trunk lid and that's why it's dripping on the side. I wonder if the piece is more of a trunk lid protection rather then stopping water dripping.
I was disappointed with the results. The trim does slightly reduce the stretch of water that pools on top of the bumper, but really the majority of water spills from the gaps at the corners.
Do any 2007-2012 models exhibit this? For sure the 2006 LS 430 did not do this, although I regularly hit my head on the 430 deck lid when leaning in and that wasn't fun either.

The trunk lids look a lot alike in all the 4LS cars. I bet the 2007-2012 drip just as badly.

I can 100% confirm that my 2011 460L does this. This is almost a daily occurrence here in the Florida summers when it rains every afternoon. I have to make sure I don't have any important papers in the trunk when I open it after it rains or they will get wet. I ended up getting a trunk organizer to keep things in and I pushed it towards back of the trunk to avoid the dripping.
Agreed. The corners are the real trouble spot. Easy to apply, like putting on stickers, but ultimately not worth it.
Looks like the trunk lid design differences you showed us earlier raises its ugly head again...Ft1 is that a gasket on the corner of the pic you highlighted in post 79? If so, my lid doesn't have the gaps or gasket I see in your pic...my lid is all formed metal with continuous metal right up to the fabric inside the lid. It looks like later designs got rid of the gap and I can only assume they put in a couple of weepholes (see bigsherv's lid) to drain any excess out but I can't imagine water gets inside the lid cavity...and even more perplexing is why they thought they needed to give my lid both the 4 weepholes and the long rubber gasket. The relentless pursuit of perfection.

jimrd, it looks like a gasket in the photo (post 79) but is actually painted metal. There is no gasket along that edge and is indeed a 1/16" to 1/8" gap between the outer trunk skin and the inner trunk deck lid. It is a very odd design and I am not surprised Lexus decided to seal the trunk in later years and add weep holes for the water to evacuate. The gap along the entire bottom edge and up the sides gives water plenty of places to flow in, and subsequently flow out when the trunk lid lifts up.
Continuing the thread on trunk leaks on LS . . . .
I got a CPO 2013 LS460L and was surprised to find a wet trunk when I got it washed the first couple of times. My trunk was very wet on the first wash and a bit wet on the second one.
Like Ft1, I also have three holes where there can be a molding attached. The previous owner might have lost it/ removed it/ or never had one.
Anyhow, is it worth the trouble to get the molding?
On my most recent car wash, I dried up the roof well with microfiber towels. I avoided a wet trunk this time. A lot of water does accumulate in the molding grooves around the top and sides of the trunk opening, so I dried it with the towels. After all that drying, a bit of water seeped out the bottom of the trunk lid, out to the top of the rear bumper and attracted dirt (an hour after thorough drying). Never had this issue on my earlier ES or RX. I was glad to find this thread.
