I believe it's an industry standard that was quickly adopted in the late 80s. It was Porsche that innovated the process. Since that time body corrosion does happen but rarely and in most cases it's primarily because the galvanic coating was compromised from prior poor body work.

You rarely see body corrosion in the wild these days and if a person acquires an old muscle car from the 70s they have to be vigilant against rust like owning firearms.

2007 LS460L, 75,000 miles - I have the same issue on the forward section of both rear wheel wells. It has come on strong within the last year. I wish I had caught it within the 10 year body corrosion warranty.

I repaired mine a few months ago. Only one side on the rear. In fairness, this area was a previous collision repair that may have not been done properly when the previous owner bought the car in Eastern Canada (rust belt). I paid a local shop 700 bucks to do it. They completely cut out the area to good metal, and then welded in a new piece. They did a phenomenal job and guarantee the repair (no rust return), for as long as I own the vehicle.

Now this is some serious rust here. This will have to be cut out and replaced with sheet metal. Was the car in an accident previously and repaired? Usually when I see rust this bad it's because it's been repaired and the shop didn't do it properly.

It is. Mine was just as bad and when the rust was scraped away, it left significant holes behind.

Yes, if this is surface rust (meaning the rust hasn't perforated the metal), then it can be ground down to bare metal, rustproofed, filled, primed and painted. You can cut the rusty part out but thats probably unnecessary (unless the rust has perforated the metal) on a car this old. If the rust has perforated the panel then there's no alternative but to cut the rusted areas out and weld in new metal.

Very suprized to see this on a Lexus in the 21st century!

Many people still say to avoid even modern used cars from or that spent a lot of time in the North East especially on the coasts if you can because of rust/using salt, some used car dealerships even upsell a car from the South not from any coastal areas in Florida so I don't know if it is a issue anymore or not. It may still be on the underside of modern cars. I have seen someone post pics here of the underside of a LS460 that had rust/corrosion on some parts and comments about East Coast cars having it while others from the South said they had none.

I don't think surface rust is too bad though on panels, it will have to be repainted but on a base black car you don't have to worry much about matching/blending.
