Direct injection is the reason so many members complain about the ticking noise. I think the carbon buildup that you cite is the precise reason that the change interval was changed from 120K to 60K.

My understanding is at some point (whenever they changed the spark plug change interval to 60K miles) the injection system was changed or altered. It became either direct injection or the multiport was changed such that port injection was only sparingly used under certain conditions. Direct injection became the primary method of fuel delivery. Hence the ticking noise, the carbon buildup and the need to change the plugs more frequently.
