I also have a 2007 LS460L that has been consuming a lot of oil. Car now has 99,000 miles on it and it burns about 1.5qts per 1,200 miles! And yet Lexus corporate states this is well within specifications. I have a 100k CPO warranty but Lexus is avoiding taking any responsibility for this. I've had my fair share of cars and worked on a lot of vehicles as well and have never seen a car consume so much oil. Is "Bollywood" the only one who's had luck getting Lexus to own up to their issue?

 

Interesting. Looks like there is a consistent issue with some 07's & 08's consuming oil. Probably a run of piston rings that are not holding up or were not aligned properly. Or what about the valve train recall. Have you had that done?

 

I was consuming those numbers last year. I then did a Rislone oil treatment which for whatever reason, lowered my consumption to 1 qt in 6k miles. Now, with the Toyota engine oil system cleaner and Toyota 0W20 oil, I expect (and hope) that my consumtion will drop even further. No idea where it goes, as I have no leaks and no blue smoke. Also, my plugs weer nice and clean when I repaced them. Not worried about it though. as the car runs like a champ now.

 

What kind of oil are you using?

 

The valve spring recall was done in 2010 however I can't imagine that would have anything to do with oil consumption unless the valve guides or seals get replaced during that work. I use 0W20 oil from Lexus, not sure which brand that is though?

 

OP, plug your VIN into mylexus.com and look at the first 28,000 miles of service history while your car was being leased. If you see no record of 5000-mile oil changes, that is likely the root cause of your oil consumption issue. Many lease car owners "forget" to have their oil changed because it's not their car. I made confirmation of 5000 mile oil changes on mylexus.com a requirement when searching for my car, and it burns no oil - heck, the oil is hard to see on the dipstick even 2000 miles after the last oil change, it is so clear.

 

My vehicle was not a leased vehicle and it has had the oil changed every 5,000 miles since new...just confirmed on mylexus.com.

 

None of the 4 Lexus I've owned has ever used a drop of oil ...

 

What I would do at this point is use a thicker grade of oil like a 5W-30 synthetic and see if you consumption comes down. If it does then it's your oil control rings.

hear my story. I have a 2006 lexus gs 300 with 102000 miles on it
i questioned the oil burning and had the consumption test done.
The results where 1.4 quarts in 1132 miles

The lexus dealer agreed the consumption was excessive but could not do anything about it.
It was up to lexus to decide

After contacting lexus customer satisfaction was told they would do nothing for me

Went back to the dealer and asked what could be done to solve my problem. Was told by the dealer they did not recommend taking the engine apart to replace the rings and any other items that may be required. They said i may have more problems then i have now if it was done.

There suggestion was to have a rebuilt engine installed at my cost.

This has made me lose all confidence in lexus reliability

Any auto maker can do a better job then this

What i question is lexus knows they have a problem but wont do anything about it

 

I posted in another thread, that Consumer Reports did a study and investigation into increasing oil consumption in newer cars. VW, Porsche and many others are suffering this phenomenon. Most manufacturers are claiming that a qt every 800 miles or so is "normal". CR disagrees.

I was consuming about a qt per 1500 miles (as I stated earlier), but now have almost no consumption of oil at 6k miles, after switching to synthetic (TGMO 0W20) and a bottle of Toyota Engine Oil Cleaner. If I take the OCI to 10k miles, I expect I may have to do 1 qt of make up oil.

 

I was just having a conversation with a friend of mine who's 07 BMW 328 consumes two quarts every 1000k miles, which is ridiculous. Audi considered it "normal" to consume oil like it's going out of style.

I've heard people blame manufacturers using oil rings with lower tension that lower the resistance of the piston travel, which in turn helps increase gas mileage - which of course is the primary concern with all vehicle manufacturers nowadays. I don't know if this is true, but it does make some sense - if those oil rings aren't as tight against the cylinder wall, they will allow too much oil to get past the compression rings.

My 07 LS460 consumes almost zero oil for 5k miles, after that point it tends to use a little bit of oil to 7k miles...maybe a quart in total. I find that to be pretty impressive. And it doesn't seem to matter what brand of oil I use, it's always the same...virtually no oil use until 5k miles...then anything over that it will drop a little bit.

 

I believe your 460 is consuming too much oil regardless what the dealership may say. Disappointing problem for 460 owners. I have my oil changed about every 5K miles and my 460 don't use a drop.

 

Not sure who this was addressed too, but I haven't had to add any so far (currently at almost 6k miles). Sounds like Doublebase hasn't either.

 

I agree that your consumption may be a little on the high side for a car with that mileage, but it is not out of line.

I agree with the dealer not to go through the expense of a rebuild or replacement of the engine. Buy regular dino oil for a buck a quart. You can go another 100K miles for and incremental cost of about $90.
