Gas: Premium vs. Regular advantages, disadvantages (merged threads)
The present - and future - price of gas is no longer a small matter. Have all Lexus' always “had” to use premium?
I've had cars that "suggested" only premium where I used regular with no bad effect. The automatic spark always seemed to sufficiently retard to avoid pinging. Obviously you lose some performance but usually that’s immaterial. I've never had a Lexus, but I'm sure that they have this "auto-correct" timing, too. I know there will be a rush to respond that: "if you can't afford premium then you can't afford a Lexus." So, there, I've said it. Now it won't be necessary to tell me that. But, just having money and throwing it away are two different things. (And, yes, I AM a cheap skate.) Bottom line .. has anyone tried regular in the current LS430's? Big Jimm So. Fla. |
Copied from my earlier post today if you had looked in the LS400 forum...
Have your pick, you will find about 20 threads in every forum, and maybe 50 in the maintenance forum... https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...light=gasoline https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showth...=&threadid=683 This one has 6 links for you: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane https://www.clublexus.com/forums/sho...ghlight=octane That should keep you busy for a while ;) |
WOW! What a list.
Thanks. Big Jimm So. Fla. |
Direct injected engines run at high compression..
near 12 to 1. Your fuel efficiency can drop 5 MPG also with low octane. So as a cheapskate you should by 91 Octane or higher and won't have to worry about less performance or worse.... engine damage.... and get superior fuel efficiency. It's actually cheaper too..

in a lexus...dont matter...any one...i wouldnt put anything less than premium :)

Using Regular Gas and Chevron vs Costco
I was told by my sales person that I could use regular gas in my 460 LWB. However, I would get about 10% worse mileage, which is slightly more than the difference in cost between premium and regular. He also suggested using Chevron (I'm in the SF Bay Area) and not use Costco premium. The Costco is about 30 cents less per gallon - including the CC and membership rebates. Any ideas? Thanks.

using regular will retard the timing in the ecu, so yes you get less performance and gas mileage affected
you are driving a 70k/80k car, overall price difference between regular and premium maybe 200 bucks a yr. you can afford that |

Crude oil goes to the refinery. Regardless of which company provided the crude, its all mixed together. When refined gasoline, be it regular, mid-grade or premium, leaves the refinery, it goes into a pipeline. At the end of the pipeline it is distributed to whoever buys it. Now at that point a particular company may put certain additives into their gasoline which may alter its characteristics, but 93 octane is 93 octane no matter whose brand it is. Its the very same gasoline.
In short, Costco 93 octane, or 87 octane, is identical to any other brand's 93 or 87 octane. It all came out of the same pipeline. Only the additives may, or may not, be different. |
Costco gas rocks - cheap too. Rumours, innuendos, urban myths...
Worry about oil changes, not gas brands... |
I happen to like Chevron Gas...I always buy gas from Chevron
|
Chevron fuel has Techron additive in it. It's very good. Around here, BP 93 is the best fuel. We don't have any Chevron Stations. I'm not sure what octane Costco premium is. I will look next time I'm there. I've never purchased fuel at Costco...

I would strongly recommend using premium gas...

i have a costco card.. do i have to pay with their cash card or does my AMEX work too? anyway, go up, if your amex is costco amex, just swipe that, or swipe your costco card. then i think it will ask you how you want to charge (no cash), and then pump |
