The ML Subwoofer issue
 

Several people have commented on the bass sound from the ML system referring to it as "boomy" or "sloppy". It's a problem on some, but not all, songs (Keep On Movin by Soul II Soul is an example).

I've done some playing around and found that placing a piece of thick carpet over the subwoofer improves the situation a lot. This, at least, confirms that the problem is the subwoofer.

If anyone else has any thoughts or ideas, please post them here.

Some but not all songs - Pretty bad on most of the stuff I try to play off the Sat radio - Cd's fare quite a bit better. First test drive of a ML system I was less than impressed due mostly to the Sub or shall we call it "Induced Headache" feature.

would the carpet over heat the sub??? wouldn't just turning down the bass from the head unit work as long as the trebile? When i need it i love it but at lower volumes the bass can be annyoing

There isn't much you can do. The sub is a bandpass design so it has a narrow sweet spot. It's designed to be small and efficient with lots of bass but if you want ultimate sound quality a sealed enclosure is best. A sealed enclosure will give you super tight hard hitting bass, the drawback being that it needs a lot more power. I have 2 10" drivers in a sealed enclosure in my Turbo and there is a 1000w amp driving them. Sometimes stuffing the enclosure can reduce the resonance but no matter what you do, there is no way to fix it.

It took me a long time, but here's a solution to this.

The amp is in the trunk on the passenger side. The plug closest to the front of the car has the wires to the subwoofer. They are red and black and are diagonal to each other. Cut these two wires at least an inch from the plug so that you have room to attach extensions to them. You have tp partially remove the amp to get to the plug.

After adding extensions to each wire end (two feet is good enough), insert them into a Niles VCS100R volume control. Use only the left or right terminals, and be sure that you are connecting to the correct leads since it's a little counter-intuitive.

I only needed to reduce the volume 1 click to eliminate the problem. I wrapped it up and left it in the wheel well as I never needed any further adjustment.

The job took about two hours, but more than half of that time was making sure I didn't cut the wrong wire or screw anything up.
