Ordering my 460 L ?
Greetings CL people! Have been lurking for a couple of months to learn about my next vehicle, the 460 L.
My 04 Land Cruiser will be paid off in September, so I'm enough months out that I'm considering ordering exactlly the vehicle I want (especially since I'm leaning toward the executive seating).
I was hoping to work with a dealer where I would be saying "you have basically no risk and carrying costs. Just tell me how much profit you want to make over invoice and we can make a deal."
I have a connection to a California dealer. Their offer to me is $5k off msrp. Using MSN Autos, it appears msrp is approx $9,500 over invoice.
I was thinking more like $2k or $3k over invoice, given the transaction.
What's everyone think? Appreciate your input. Bob.

Unless gas spikes further (and maybe even if it does), they are gonna probably get more than $3K above invoice in the beginning. If you can and will wait until Xmas, you'll probably do better.
Supply and demand...supply and demand...

Welcome to CL, JustBob, and good luck with your purchase! Definitely a good idea to compare with prices online, although with the Exec package the supply/ordering is probably more involved--but very nice.
5k off msrp and it's 9k over invoice? that sounds like big difference, 14k is a huge difference. make sure you are getting the invoice price right with all the options you are getting.
for the 86k car (the one right below the exec pcakage), the invoice price is around 76k. so the difference is 10k.
but in any case, if you ask me, 3k over invoice for lwb sounds about right

Sorry Rominl, I didn't communicate that very clearly.
What it looks like to me, before you start adding options, is that the dealer has about $9,500 profit. If you forget about their profit on options, and they give you $5,000 of msrp, their profit would be $4,500.
As to the comment about LWB/Exec in short supply, seems like ordering one, if lexus accepts the order, negates that issue.
Looks like they have about $2,500 in profit on the exec package.
Well, I can wait until I get the options nailed down and they give me the price, and say no, I need more than $5,000 off msrp. We'll see.

i see what you mean now. like i said, 3k over invoice is the most i would shoot for, especially in current economy. the car might be in short supply, but i bet the demand is lower now too
Bob, don't negotiate down from MSRP, negotiate up from dealer cost.
The way car sales are going right now, I don't think you should have to pay more than $1000 over dealer cost. (Don't forget they still make the hold back
).

May be the easiest way to find out if you get a good deal is to just email all the dealer in your neighborhood and figure out what is your best deal. And then you can look at forum like this that can tell you price in different part of the country... Depending how much travel you want to do, you can pick one up in SoCal (which seems to have the best deal for any car) and drive it home or ship it home.. There is really no magic bullet. All of us are in different part of the country and car price has a lot to do with the supply and demand in your local market. Generally the more dealers in a given city, the lower the price...

When I purchased my LS460 SWB in December of last year, I checked into ordering a to custom LWB. No dealer in my area really to do anything better than 1k off msrp. A deal better that 1k off msrp could only be done with a care in inventory. It’s just a guess, but perhaps the sales staff was under so much pressure to meet the current months sales quotas, they can’t be bothered doing any work on a deal that isn’t going to fully realize for 3 months. Also, the argument just filling out on order form with no risk or capital used to do the deal really mainly benefits the dealership owner and less so the sales staff.
