Unhappy Aaargh ... brake dust.

Have only a little over a hundred miles on my new LS, and I noticed the wheels are coated with brake dust. Reminds me of my BMW days ...

I'm hoping it's just the new brakes bedding in, but I know I'm just kidding myself.

They'll never be as bad as the European brake systems, but all cars now have eliminated asbestos lining which used to brake "clean" as it were. To compensate for this elimination, metalized linings which replaced them caused hot particles to be thrown against the lacquered wheel surfaces and if this was not removed soon, the wheels would eventually become caked with the stuff in some case making it impossible to clean at all. Japanese and North American cars did not suffer this fate fortunately and so they are much easier to clean, even when it is left on for a while.

I've just been blessed not to have a brake dust problem with my last 3 or 4 cars, so it was with some dismay that I saw how much was generated in only 100 miles.

Oh, well.

yes, it's pretty bad. on the gs, you can request (there is a tsib) less dust pads (the ones from gs450h) under warranty.

maybe you can talk to dealership and see if the 600hl ones are different and less dust? or maybe even the gs450h ones?

Hmm... that is very interesting? I have about 350 miles on my car and there is very minimal dust on on the wheels. Unless you are doing some spirited driving thus requiring very hard braking?

I have minimal dust, but there is some dust

don't think you can ever get rid of it completely

Do you think the dust problem will be worse with the 19 inch wheels with larger breaks?

Nope. Been babying her around, since the first couple of hundred miles on new pads are very important.

I'm just not used to having brake dust, and when I attacked it with glass cleaner there was even more on there than I thought.

And of course, it stained my fingers and I had to scrub all the skin off to get rid of it.

Like I said, maybe they're just bedding in and the dust will decrease. [fingers crossed]

I agree. I too don't like the brake dust either especially on chrome wheels. Also, please note that I have not noticed any reduction in dust with increase in mileage and time.

umm, it could be, but i am not 100%. for the touring package, you have larger rotors, but i didn't read about more aggressive pads

Dirty wheels are a pet peeve of mine. I have the ceramic pads on my touring 19' wheels and they are just as bad. I clean my wheels every 2 days with S-100 detail polish. You can find it on-line or at motorcycle shops. You can spray it on a dirty wheel and it cleans it right up. It leaves wax behind so the next time it's easier. Also the yellow box, "rags in a box" (I forget who makes them) is made of cellulose not paper or wood so they will not scratch the wheel paint used often. I would NOT use them on the auto paint. You can get them at Ace Hardware or Home Depot.

I had dustless pads on my other car and they are not dustless, they cut down the brake dust by 50-60%.

The 19 inch wheels do in fact come with more agressive pads and will dust more. There is currently not a TSIB for this.

I have ad my car for over a year now and I have not experienced that much brake dust. Obviously when it rains I see a little more but maybe it is because it is so dry in Vegas that I have not noticed it too much. I get my car washed about 2-3 times a week though so that is probably some of the reason that I don't see dust.
