DVD Audio discs
Does anyone have experience with playing a DVD-audio formatted disc in the LS460 with the upgraded ML sound system? From what I have read, the sound quality is noticeably better than a traditional audio CD. However, in searching around the internet, it appears that there are no more than a few hundred titles published in this new format. Some of them are remakes from older albums, like Foreigner and Pink Floyd.
I'm curious to know if anyone has listened to any of these, and if the difference is noticeable enough to warrant buying some of these discs if you already have the older formatted CDs of the same title.
Also, has anyone tried using SACD formatted discs. The manual states that they "may" not work in the DVD player, but I don't have one to try out. This format appears to be a competitor to DVD-audio for higher fidelity sound than the traditional redbook CD format.

I have played the DVD-A's but have no reference to compare it to.
DVD-A is limited and I have more SACD's then A's but did not try the SACD in the car.

Go here for some good reviews and lists of both DVD-A & SACD.
Enjoy.

I bought a few DVD-A discs to use in the car. There is definitely a limited selection and I probably won't buy too many since the car is the only place I can use them. The sound quality is very nice though but not enough so to justify getting a whole bunch of them.
My son gave me a DVD-A disc - Andrea Bocelli singing Verdi. The sound is absolutely fabulous. I am looking for more DVD-As but as mentioned by others they are not easy to find and the selection is limited.
The great feature with the ML system is that what ever position you sit in the car, the sound is perfectly balanced for that spot. I love the technology this car brings.

I purchased the Olivia Newton John DVD-A (One Woman's Journey) live concert to test out the audio capabilities of the car. I've spent about 2 hours listening to it now, and playing around with the Bass and Treble controls to try and get the best sound.
The audio quality of the DVD is outstanding. When the audience claps their hands you can actually hear the individual hands clapping as if you are right there in the audience. Her voice is crystal clear, and each instrument has its own detail which can be uniquely identified.
I think you have to be a bit of an audiophile to really appreciate the differences between CD and DVD-A. There is no doubt that the sound is better, but if the average person listened to this DVD without knowing it was anything different from a regular CD, I'm not sure if they would think it sounded different enough to question it. It's kind of like trying to tell the different between a $30 bottle of wine and a $100 bottle. A true wine connoisseur would think the difference is tremendous, while the average wine drinker may not be able to tell the difference.
If I happen to see a DVD-A disc that I want to buy, I would definitely buy it in DVD-A format over CD format, even if it cost more. However, with such a limited library of titles out there, this format seems more like a teaser than anything else. The titles are so obscure that I think you end up buying a disc just because of the format rather than because you really want the title.

I think the LIVE in concert DVD-A's give you more details then the studio produced ones.
Like I said before, if it is out there, this place has them.

That is true. I have purchased several DVD-A's that I already had the cd to just to hear the difference.
