Audio cutting out
I’ve been chasing a strange audio issue on my 2008 Lexus LS 460 with navigation and Mark Levinson audio, and I’m curious if anyone here has run into something similar.
The symptom is very specific: regardless of source (FM radio, SAT, DISC, AUX, etc.), the audio will briefly cut out for about 1–2 seconds, then come right back like nothing happened. No static, no distortion, just a clean split-second silence.
What makes it interesting is that it seems very repeatable. If I switch sources, it will often do the first dropout after around 2 minutes, and then after that it seems to happen roughly every 3 minutes (around 3:05 or so). I recently tested it again in accessory mode only (engine off, just infotainment on), listening through AUX, and it still did it at almost exactly the same timing.
One thing to note: on DISC/CD mode it behaves a little differently. Instead of just one quick dropout, it almost seems like it cuts out twice in quick succession, and during that moment the track information on the screen (album name, track title, etc.) disappears briefly and then comes back. That made me think even more that something in the system is resetting rather than it being a speaker or amplifier issue. Also, I have not connected my phone to the Bluetooth.
I found in the service history that over a decade ago, a previous owner had the XM tuner replaced because satellite radio had stopped working intermittently, especially after the car sat in the sun. Not sure if that’s related or just old history, but it made me wonder if the XM module could be involved.
Has anyone seen this exact kind of timed audio dropout before on an LS 460? Especially with navigation + Mark Levinson?
I’m planning to time it so I can try the steering wheel button for the navigation voice prompt also cuts out when the dropout happens.
Would love to hear if anyone has dealt with this before, whether it ended up being XM, Bluetooth, telematics, amp-related, or something else entirely.

That's a tough one, although it could be worse if it was a random cut out. The fact that all sources are affected points to the amp, which is notorious for going bad. Perhaps someone has experienced the same problem and can help.
My suggestion is to start easy. Start by disconnecting the battery and leave it disconnected for a while (~30mins). This may reset the amp. Test it.
If this does not work (most likely), then get yourself a good electric contact spray (deoxit is a good one), pull the connections to the amp one at a time and spray both ends liberally. The amp is in the trunk, search youtube to find it. Do this with the engine off and preferably with the battery disconnected. After you are done spraying the connectors, plug and unplug them several times - this helps clean the pins. Then test it. Given the failure mode, you will know immediately.
Don't expect miracles! Such easy steps often do not work, but sometimes you get lucky.
The final step is to contact a repair shop and talk to them. Be warned that the repair is several hundred $$ (about $600).
Good luck!

Thank you, @chrispap for your reply! I have tried your suggestions, first disconnecting the battery for a while for a minor reset, and then later disconnecting the battery and getting back to the Mark Levinson amplifier and making sure that all the connectors are clean. Neither time has there been any change in behavior of the audio cutting out. That's not to say I don't appreciate your suggestions, though! I think next I will have to go back into the trunk and listen to the amp to hear if it makes weird noises every time the audio drops and feel if it gets wicked hot, I've been wondering if that might be a reason for a possible cause of this issue.
I did install a GROM Vline2 on my car last week, slightly hoping that the install process would allow me to understand things better and maybe even find out what could be causing the cutouts every 3 min 5 sec or 2 min 5 sec after changing sources. All I will say for now is that the Vline2 isn't perfect and doesn't like to be overloaded with stuff through CarPlay for navigation, and I get the sense that the audio cutting out/reseting certainly does NOT help that whole situation, which makes sense given that interfacing modern software with Toyota-Lexus 2007 software is not easy to begin with, and having audio reset at regular intervals certainly throws things off. So during longer drives I have to stop and restart the VL2 so it can actually work for me. But, to me, it's okay. Still a worthwhile investment. That's just life with an aging modern car.
Obviously, I will keep this thread going with anything else I find out. I'm staying curious.

It was worth trying the easy stuff, but it is not surprising they did not work. The next step is to locate a shop that has experience with these amps, call them and have a conversation about what it might be wrong and how much to repair. Then you can decide if you want to fix it.
