Default Rear Air Flow

Hi guys!

I tried searching other threads for these questions, but I was not able to find anything about these issues. My apologies if there is a thread and I missed it.

I have a '14 UL and on page 414 of the owner's manual, it is referencing the air purifier and adjusting the air flow. My question is in regard to heating. When the heater is turned on in the back, and the fan is set high, air flows out of the vent behind the seat, like the image shows it should. My question is, should that air be warm since the heater is set, or is that for cold air only, like the upper vents for a/c? Also, when the settings are set to auto, and even if the temp is set to high, the fan doesn't come on. The temp for the seat heaters come on, but the fan doesn't to warm the back seat area. Is this normal? My final question is about the floor vents. On page 413, it references where the air flow should be coming from. Even when I turn the fan on high and the temp to high, I barely feel any air coming from the floor vent and middle console vents. Does this mean there is a possible blockage, or is the fan for these vents just not strong?

Thanks so much for the help.

The front touch screen has settings for front and rear. You can choose 2 zone or 4 zone for climate control. 2 zone locks out the rear controls. Check those settings.

The rear controls are not locked--sorry, I forgot to mention that. It is when the vehicle is in 4 zone and I adjust the temp/fan for the rear from the rear controls.

It sounds like you get heat when it’s in 2 zone mode. Correct? Hook up an OBD2 reader and let us know if there are any codes. It’s possible that shutters that direct heat aren’t working.

Dumb question but have you checked the rear air filter already?

I just took a pic of the rear display. The car is in 4-zone, I just turned both rear settings up to high just to see if that would make a difference. The fan isn't coming on, even with both settings a high.

I will see about getting the car checked for codes. I don't have a code reader, but I can see if Auto Zone will do that, right?

I just changed the rear air filter, too. So it's brand new.

I really appreciate the help. Thank you so much.

Try auto zone but they may only give a vague code. So, if you get a code, go to a shop that has a reader for Lexus vehicles to get a specific issue narrowed down.
If you put the controls to 2 zone, will heat come out?

You're not going to get any codes. It's not emissions related, just like you won't see solar sensor codes via OBD. You would need to use Techstream to see what is going on with the dampers and any HVAC trouble codes related to them.

Also, watch this video. It's for a 2007, but the concept is the same and is related to what you are seeing.

Thank you for the video and information. I am guessing the dealerships use Techstream?

Few options, you can use an old Windows XP/7 laptop and download it free. You can also buy an actual Toyota laptop with it preloaded on ebay for a couple hundred bucks.

Try putting everything on auto, then set the two rear seats to max hot. The climate up front should go into 4 zone and you should be getting hot air from the front. It's not going to be full blast air though, more of a gentle breeze. It's all going to depend on what the rear infrared sensors are picking up on the temperature back there.

Check your owner's manual. I have an 08 LS600 and there's a little line in there that basically says that the upper vents will blow cool air even when the heater is on. I think it's just to move the air around more. Gets really annoying when it's super cold out (0F) but it's a feature not a bug. Might be the same on your car.

I did check the manual. I referenced the pages in the manual about the air flow and ducts.

You never answered my question: when the system is in 2 zone on the front screen, do you get hot air blowing out of any rear vents? If so, this would indicate a possible problem with the rear console controller???
